Help Nepal Rebuild

Donation protected

I was sitting on the third floor of a coffee shop in Pokhara, Nepal when the ground started to shake. Gradually, the tremors intensified and instilled fear into the minds of those around me. This was an earthquake, and no ordinary one. With hearts pounding out of our chests, people evacuated the building in a hurry, to gather with hundreds of others in the middle of the street. Buildings stood on both sides of us, frightening bystanders with a height of insecurity that could make you sick.

The ground was shaking violently, everyone was breathing heavy, screams and cries could be heard from every corner. Stressed and panicked, people did not know how to react to what was unfolding. When the tremors finally subsided, the stress did not, for this was only the beginning. In minutes, reports were out suggesting this was a 7.9 earthquake, and hundreds of lives were already lost. I called friends in Kathmandu to make sure they were safe - they had lost homes, friends had lost friends, and an intense fear and vulnerability overwhelmed the conversations.

With over 8,000 people dead and thousands more injured, people across Nepal are left without food, water,  shelter or power. Access to health care is limited by stressed resources, and disease will inevitably spread due to the absence of sanitation. It is the worst crisis that has hit Nepal in over 80 years, and organizations and governments are doing everything they can to help, but it is still not enough.

My social venture in Kathmandu, Nepal, Somu Energy, is raising 15,000USD to help rural communities devastated by the earthquake.

The funds we raise in this campaign will be used to build semi-permanent schools in Sindupalchok District using locally sourced materials, such as bamboo, dung, straw and rubble.. In addition to the school, Recharge Labs will help local community members reconstruct their homes and  set up recharging stations from which community members will be able to rent power banks that can be used for phone charging and lighting.

Contribute now to make a difference and stand with the people of Nepal during these trying times. Thank you in advance for your contributions.
