Becoming a Needmeeter
A couple of years ago, I went out of town for a short work-related trip. While walking the streets downtown after dinner with my coworker, a homeless man standing with his teenage daughter and son caught my eye. They were holding a sign, but I don’t believe I ever read what it said. I slowed my pace and genuinely felt sorry that I had nothing to give him. I don’t normally carry cash and for once I had eaten all of my food at the restaurant. My mind scrambled to think of something I could offer. At this point, I felt the arm of my jacket being pinched. I heard my coworker say- “Don’t talk to them, you’re inviting trouble!”
The anger I felt in that moment fueled me to devise a plan to help those in need. Although I would love to by a home for every person living on the streets, God reminds me to think inside of the box. I learned that in order to make a big impact I would first have to start small. There are those here in Charlotte, and all over the world, who would greatly appreciate the little things we take for granted each day. Needmeeters exists to meet the needs we can meet and trust God for the rest.
Since I have been acting on this vision, my Nissan has been doing double duty. It has been the carpool mobile and well as the Needmeeter Mobile. Each morning, before I head downtown to find homeless neighbors, I load up items requested by individuals I met on the streets the day before. Clothes, shoes, baby wipes, bottles and more are all packed. Maple Street Biscuit Company in Concord has graciously partnered with Needmeeters and has had biscuits waiting to be picked up daily. I make a run to the grocery store to get water and fruit so that those I encounter can enjoy a nice breakfast. Those living under the bridges, in the tent camps and the shelters all now know me as "The Biscuit Lady"!
I can’t even explain how fast God has been moving. Not only have warm blankets, food and clothing been given, hope is being restored. Those who could not gain employment now have the necessary documents to apply for a job. A UNCC student living in the woods can continue to focus on his studies after a good night's sleep in a new sleeping bag and tent. Donations are pouring in, people want to help, and specific needs are being met in jaw-dropping ways. I am excited for what else is in store for Needmeeters, our partners and most importantly our homeless neighbors.

Funds raised will go towards the purchase of our Needmeeter mobile- a mobile unit stocked with donations, backpacks, hygiene items and supplies so that we are ALWAYS ready to meet the needs of those living in poverty.
