Nathan Eckert, a 22-year old from Batavia, Ohio, who suffered an unexpected severe anoxic brain injury in June 2021.
A year ago, doctors did not expect Nathan to improve to ever have quality of life at any level. Against all odds, with the assistance of his family, friends and community, Nathan astounds everyone with his recovery thus far. From the beginning, those who loved him had an overwhelmingly positive attitude that he would come back to us. To this day, Nathan continues to carry that outlook on the road to recovery. He has gained once impossible attributes, such as eating, speaking, walking and reclaiming his original personality and memory.
Despite Nathan's shockingly advanced recovery, the cost of medical care and charges related to relearning skills that lead to living independently in the future is exorbitant and continues to remain heavily burdensome for his family.
He doesn’t have complete control of his limbs to the point where he can get up and walk around alone. He can’t feed himself without assistance. He can’t go to the bathroom without assistance. He also, unfortunately, cannot see out of 88% of his eyes, so he’s basically blind (this is due to the connection from the brain to the retina, which many doctors will tell you cannot be restored, but we have faith it will be restored at some point to some extent).
His appointment for the Autologus Stem Cell treatment is in the end of August, in Kansas City. Please keep him and my parents in your thoughts and prayers. We need this to go as smoothly as possible and help do the “impossible”. If anyone can do it, it’s Nathan! The cost of the treatment is $16,000 each time. He will likely have to repeat the procedure in 2023, as well.
