The Byrd family gave birth to their beautiful baby boy Nathan on December 10, 2015, the most joyous day of their lives, so eagerly anticipated.  Nathan had been diagnosed with a heart defect in utero but was thriving after he was born, so loved and almost constantly snuggled.  Unfortunately, little Nathan became ill with a respiratory virus when he was three weeks old and was admitted to the PICU at VCU.  The virus, RSV, is dangerous for any infant but for Nathan was also complicated by his heart defect.  Nathan seemed to be coping with the virus but suddenly became so much worse several days after being admitted.  He had a bacterial infection in his bloodstream.  His little body could not fight off the infection and began to shut down despite the most rigorous interventions and the best possible care provided by the amazing team at VCU medical center.  Nathan fought so hard and gave everything he could.  He died on a Sunday morning, January 10, safe in his mother's arms, loved as he had been since his first breath. 

This GoFundMe account is to help the Byrds pay for the extensive medical bills that were accrued while Nathan was hospitalized.  Nathan was on the ultimate amount of life support possible and the bills will be quite devastating financially.  Any donation is appreciated by the family as they grieve over the loss of their most perfect son.  Their time to heal should not be clouded by financial uncertainty and stress over bills.
