Help Save Angela's Leg and Lift our Burden of an $86,000 Medical Emergency

Hi, my name is Nate Sanders, a longtime member of House of Mercy ministry, a board member for RISE2hope and a volunteer for "The "IF" Project and "Before the Badge" with The Seattle Police Dept, and in colaboration with Mentor Seattle: The Barber Shop; King County Sheriff's Dept.

I recently married the love of my life, Angela who I still can’t help but refer to as “my bride.” On March 12th, we set off to Nassau, Bahamas to celebrate her Birthday and our 2nd Wedding Anniversary — a joyful trip that turned into the most terrifying experience of our lives.

On the 2nd day there, we went on an ATV tour — something we thought would be fun and memorable. But halfway through, everything changed. Angela's ATV hit loose gravel, and she lost control. It flipped multiple times, and when it finally stopped, it had landed on top of her leg. I’ll never forget the sight of half the blood in her body soaking into the gravel beneath her. Her ankle was bent at a 90-degree angle, and I just let the Spirit lead me as I took off my belt and tied it around her leg as a tourniquet. Later, a doctor told me that move saved her life.

A kind woman named Hope — a nearby resident — came running with pillows and a cold compress. She looked me in the eye, and told me that once we got her stabilized to get my wife out of the country to an American hospital. We waited for over an hour in the sweltering heat for the ambulance. When the ambulance finally got us to the hospital, we were hit with the next wave of trauma: the hospital wouldn’t accept our insurance. It cost $3,000 just to get her through the ER doors. In the process of moving her from ER to OR and for her needed surgeries they demanded $10,000 — 3 times, and there's still a $7,000 balance. The bills quickly ballooned to $31,000, wiping out our savings and maxing out our credit cards. At one point, we were told they might have to amputate her leg.

We were desperate — not just to save her leg, but to save her life. Angela's sister, who works in the medical field, urged us to get her to a level 1 trauma center in Florida. That emergency flight alone cost us an additional $20,000.

I was told and I do believe, God will provide. He always has. But now, we need help.

In total, we’re facing the possibility of $86,000 in medical expenses. On top of that, I’ve had to take three months off work to care for Angela and be by her side through her long recovery.

We’re setting a goal of $65,000 to help cover the costs that insurance didn’t — hospital fees, emergency transport, surgery, and follow-up care, temporary lodging and a rental car.

If you’re able to give, even a little, it would mean the world to us. If you’re not in a place to give, your prayers and shares are just as valuable. We’ve seen firsthand how fragile life is — but also how powerful love, faith, and community can be.

Thank you for reading our story. We’re trusting God — and believing in the goodness of people.

With love and gratitude, Nate & Angela Sanders
