Raising Funds for Convalescent Plasma Program

Currently, there are NO drug therapies or vaccines to treat the novel coronavirus. However, CONVALESCENT PLASMA (CP) THERAPY has been employed for over a century for various health crises, and is now being used to treat critically-ill COVID patients. CP works by transfusing the antibody-enriched blood of a patient who has recovered from the virus into an infected/critically ill patient. The blood transfusion boosts the critically ill patient’s immune response to COVID.
We are seeking donations for the NEW YORK BLOOD CENTER ENTERPRISES (NYBCe), one of the largest providers of CP therapy.
Unfortunately, there is a SEVERE shortage of resources for blood banks: ranging from adequate tests for COVID antibodies, to medical resources to extract and transfer the plasma from recovered patients in hospitals. Demand for CP Therapy has far outstripped capabilities, and hundreds of families are forced to plead and wait for treatment for their loved ones.
The New York Blood Center’s massive laboratory assembles a dedicated team of virologists and epidemiologists engaged in cutting edge research. Since the outbreak of SARS in 2003 and MERS in 2012, they have continually worked to develop tests and therapies. Currently, the Blood Center is working to launch pre-clinical trials for a vaccine made for SARS COV 2, a long-term solution to this crisis. The New York Blood Center is integrated into the national supply chain, not only serving New York but Maryland, Kansas, Missouri and many other states across the country.
In this daunting hour, we cannot stress how many acts of kindness have been carried out despite the horrible circumstances. In an effort to contribute to this collective force, as students at Columbia University–which is central in the fight of this epidemic–we are seeking ANY FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION which will support research towards a vaccine and SAVE the lives of critically ill COVID patients.
