Hi, my name is Holly and I am an artist and writer in Toronto. I am raising funds to write a story about what happened to Cinderella after she married her Prince Charming.
I was researching for another writing project when this idea came to me. I was studying fairy tales, and Cinderella was one of them. I read a few different versions of it and different themes were emerging. But one question kept coming up for me - what happened afterwards? What happened after the dream wedding? What happened after she got her wish? What happened when she got the guy?
The ideas just kept coming… What if Prince Charming turned out to be a phony and a douchebag? What if, because Cinderella was a girl with some serious trauma, she was likely to find herself in another situation where she was being mistreated? - because that’s how the cycle can often go. What if Prince Charming was a bit of a predator, and had an instinct for girls who had trauma, and hand picked her for that reason? What if he could sense her low self-esteem from across the room, hidden behind an incredible ball gown? What would that look like after the wedding when she thinks they are about to move into the castle, but instead move into a small cottage in the country because the castle isn’t his, and his parents won’t let him live there because maybe they’re tired of his freeloading and want him to make his own way? What would that look like for Cinderella as the real person she married is slowly revealed as secrets become known? And what would that feel like for her that everyone thinks she just won the lottery but only feels increasingly trapped and she feels like she’s totally losing herself? And what would she do, if the magic that helped her find her Prince has now disappeared without a trace and she is now left to her own devices?
From royally inappropriate in-laws, to the witch in the woods the Prince warns Cinderella to never go near, (pssst… it’s his ex-girlfriend), the end of the fairy tale was just the beginning as Cinderella has to find her way without her Fairy Godmother.
This story is taking a playful spin on the fairy tale, blending humour and satire, but beneath the surface exploring misogynistic themes and reflecting the experiences that so many women have lived through. Lighthearted, beautiful and messy, it will reconfigure our ideas about this story and perhaps our own experiences in a way that will allow us to share, laugh, and cry together.
The funds I raise here will go towards allowing me to have the time to work on this project with my whole heart. I am really looking forward to giving every ounce of my being to this. As a working single mom, I spend most of my days working to just keep everything afloat. Anything that I raise will help me
cover expenses and allow me to carve out time to write while I continue to work part-time also, to support myself.
So if you think this would be a fun read, donate now! No donation is too small and I am so grateful for every dollar! - honestly, even if you donated $1, I would be ecstatic!
I am so excited for us to go on this journey together and I encourage you to message me with your email address so that I can keep you posted on the progress and publication.
Thank you so so much!
