Mom's House Fire!!! by Elaine Cato

My Mother, who lived in her home for 30+ years recently had a house fire rendering the home a total loss. She resided with her sister, Emma aka 'Peddy', whom she has cared for over 40+ years. Thank God no one was harmed in the fire.
This devastation resulted in the home, and all contents of years of memories, being demolished. Since, with both being elderly, they had to endure some uncomfortable circumstances (such as sleeping in my living room in a small apartment) until better arrangements could be made.
I worked diligently to find residential placement for my Aunt, which was an unbelievable undertaking but God blessed us after quite some time. And she's being well cared for now.

Due to mobility limitations, I was forced to relocate. I leased a one story home to help my Mom be as comfortable as possible. She's lost a lot of her personal independence in addition to her home and her sister as companion, which has taken it's toll.
After getting permission to look into her business affairs, I realized some really bad situations.  My perception is that her insurance company and her mortgage company was taking advantage of her as a senior.  She made some changes, of which the family was not aware of, upon suggestion from representatives who convinced her that she was receiving an upgrade.

In reality, she was paying double the average person for home insurance with less coverage and her mortgage rate was ridiculous (I'm embarrassed to say the rate was at least four times for the average homeowner).

So because of what I consider extreme gouging, she ended up owing an excessive balance on her mortgage which consumed a lot of the insurance allotment for rebuilding.  Because her property was undervalued when the new insurance policy was increased for renewal, we were already at a disadvantage.  However, deadlines are fast approaching.

Although we are dealing with a tough situation, we are thankful for what we have, the memories we hold and what we've accomplished thus far.  My Mom has spent her entire life taking care of others with very little. She never turned anyone away.  And we celebrate her.
As a single Mom myself, I would not have survived raising my two daughters without her support. Now my girls are both in college and I owe so much to her.  Now it's my turn to take care of her. It gets frustrating at times, but it's a vow I will always honor.

With all the sorrow and suffering so many people are experiencing today, please know that we are very hurtful and prayerful.  So many others are in much greater need.

My main charity organization is the Rescue Mission. I have volunteered and have certainly donated. So from this endeavor, we will make a contribution.

Thank you for your support!!!
