BE A PERIOD WARRIOR - HELP TO CHANGE LIVES

Here's the headline from The Guardian, 16th Nov.2020

Period poverty has surged in the UK during the Covid pandemic
Charity supplying six times as many menstrual products compared with before the crisis

Most of my work is in Kenya but during this pandemic, I have been working with various local charities and the need for period products is real.  Period poverty is happening here in the UK!

During the first lockdown, we made over 1000 pads for the local food bank and other charities.

I am now making dignity bags for local community support groups who give refuge to those fleeing domestic violence, asylum seekers, refugees, and people who are in need.

The Period dignity bag will contain:

Reusable sanitary pads;
Wet bag for soiled pads;
Soap and toiletries;
Knickers and one pair with a waterproof gusset.

The beauty of these bags is that the people receiving them need not worry about affording period products for many years.  They will not be polluting the planet with single-use plastic and their bodies will be free of plastic and any chemicals used in the processing of the pads.

Any money raised will be used to make  dignity bags for the UK and Kenya

65% of Kenyan females cannot afford sanitary pads and either choose absenteeism or resort to using old bits of a mattress, cloth, newspaper, or other unsanitary solutions which often lead to infection and skin rashes;

Periods have been unmentionable for too long!
Periods are not dirty little secrets!

Periods are NORMAL.
Periods are NATURAL.
Periods are HEALTHY.

Many girls, 65%, in Kenya cannot afford sanitary pads.  Many resort to cheaper unhygienic options.   They have to make a choice.   Stay in school and resort to using old bits of a mattress, cloth, newspaper, or other unsanitary solutions which often lead to infection and skin rashes or choose absenteeism - and here the gender gap widens with 60% of girls dropping out of school!

Many families have to make the choice; food always comes first but periods are an inevitable part of a woman's life and lack of period products often prevents a girl realising their dreams and fulfilling their potential.

Working with menstrual health practitioners,  we offer a whole day workshop.  Open discussion of all things menstrual and sexually transmitted diseases - we play games, have fun, provide activities so learning is achieved and the students leave fully understanding their cycle and the possible impact on their lives of unprotected sex.
We always have a sewing workshop where we have the opportunity to chat and teach the students to make their reusable pads.

Our period dignity bags contain:
a set of reusable pads;
a small bucket and soap to wash the pads;
a pair of pants which have a waterproof liner;
2 or 3 pairs of new pants;
cut-outs of pads, plus needles and cotton to practice another pad.

Just £10 will buy one period dignity bag

Girls in the schools we have visited can now go to school without the fear of embarrassment, stigma, risk of infection, or having to stay at home 3-5 days a month and missing out on valued education.

Help me to continue the education around periods by raising awareness, continuing the conversation, and allowing our young women the right to continue their education and fulfill their potential and make the choices that education gives us.

Thank you x
