Mikey is 10 years old, and has been fighting a brain tumour for nearly 3 years.
He was diagnosed on 22nd December 2011, and spent that christmas fighting for his life. He had 12 hours of brain surgery on 29/12/11, to try to remove the tumour but unfortunately it was found to be wrapped around the brain stem and could not be fully removed, however part of it was taken away. Mikey was allowed home at the end of Feb 2012.
Unfortunately in September 2012 we were given the news that the tumour had begun to grow back. Mikey started chemotherapy, however it was unsuccessful.
In the next 2 years Mikey tried 4 different chemotherapy drugs. The tumour responded to none of these.
In June 2014 surgery was attempted again and a lot of tumour was removed, although the tumour could still not be fully removed.
In Sept 2014 we were told that Mikeys tumour was still growing, and they were running out of options to try. The tumour is still around the brain stem and into the middle of his brain.
Mikey is now trying another chemotherapy drug. In preparation for the news that the tumour has not responded to this either, Mikey has been referred for Proton Therapy in America . If his case is successful the NHS will fund his treatment. We are so so grateful for just the opportunity of Mikey being considered for this.
If Mikey is successful and offered the funding, we will be relocating our family to America the next time we get the news that his tumour is growing.
Breaking the news to Mikey that he has run out of chemotherapy options will be heart breaking enough, without also having to tell him that he is going to be relocated to America for 8-12 weeks without his family. Therefore we have made the decision that when the time comes, we will make sure he takes his family with him.
To do this we need to raise a minimum of £20,000 to cover the cost of what the NHS does not fund, and also to ensure that Mikey's experience of this treatment is as smooth and comfortable as possible.
Any money not used for treatment in America will either be given to a childrens cancer charity or another child trying to get to this life saving treatment.
Please consider helping, whether by fundraising or a donation. All help will be gratefully received.Follow Mikey's journey here
