My name is Mikel Adams. I am 27 years old recently engaged and a father of two wonderful children. On January 16th 2016 I was on vacation with my Fiancée and was rushed to a hospital with a swollen face. I was diagnosed with Necrotizing Faciitis. From January until March of 2016 I underwent 17 surgeries and was in a medically induced coma. The infection caused me to also develop strep and staph infections. Due to the bacteria in my body I had to have the left side of my face, my neck, and part of my chest removed. I also had to have my intestines and stomach cut out of my body to reduce inflammation. The doctors were able to take skin graphs and two muscles out of my thigh in order to put my face, chest and neck back together! The muscles from my thigh were put into my neck in order to support my head. With the skin graphs that were done to reconstruct my face I lost all of the hearing on my left side as well. After waking up in the hospital I was told all of the things that had happened it was an eye opening experience. I was not sure how to handle it. Through physical therapy and a lot of support I was able to learn how to walk again as well as how to speak and eat! I was sent home and began to recover, I had a hole in my trachea, 3 tubes in my stomach and intestines and a wound vacuum on my stomach when I was released. After two very long months of home care my trachea had closed, the tubes had been removed and the wound vacuum was taken off. I was left with a scar on my stomach 20 inches long and 8 inches wide from my sternum down to my pelvis, missing half of my face, two muscles out of my leg, and my thigh for a neck. In June of 2016 I was told that I needed to have another emergency surgery on my stomach due to incisional hernias. I scheduled surgery for the very next day! I woke up after surgery in an immense amount of pain, I thought that maybe something had gone wrong. The surgeon came to my room and consulted with me in what had happened. He said " Mikel I had to cut all of the scar tissue from the wound vacuum out of your stomach, I then had to cut your abdominal muscles to pull them back together". He the. Informed me he had removed my muscles and put a piece of surgical mesh netting underneath my abdominal muscles and had to see my stomach muscles to it. The surgeon also had to put surgical mesh on the top side of my muscles and sewed them to that peice of mesh as well. After being in the hospital for the night I was sent home to recover. I was unable to move without assistance, my wonderdul family did an amazing job taking care of me once again! Unfortunately it took until August to recover enough to take care of myself. I have not fully recovers as of yet. I am still unable to use my abdominal muscles or my left leg to a full capacity. I am raising this money because I have not been able to work since this accident.
