Michael’s kidney transplant and recovery fund
Donation protected
My name is Aran Rice. When I met Michael in high school 40 years ago, he had flat feet, a smooth jump shot and a huge heart.
We have been friends for a long time and shared a lot but one of the most unexpected things we have shared is a rare disease called IgA Nephropathy.
IgA is an autoimmune disease that results in kidney damage that is irreversible and often leads to kidney failure. It’s cause is unknown though all people with IgA share the same genetic defect. Michael was diagnosed over 20 years ago but biopsies indicate the disease has been active for about 40 years. Despite his incredible efforts he is finally facing the need for a transplant to save his life. He is extremely fortunate that his friend Robert has stepped forward as a living donor candidate and they are currently awaiting his final approval. If he is approved then a surgery date will be assigned. If not, Michael will be in need of another living donor.
Over the last five years Michael’s fight with IgA has become more and more disabling due to high blood pressure, nausea , brain fog and fatigue. He is no longer able to support himself as a self-employed musician and private music teacher. Now as he enters these final months of testing, the surgery itself, and then recovery, Michael is in need of financial support. Beyond just the need to pay bills and rent during the 6-9 months before the transplant and at least 4 - 6 months of recovery, he also must be able to demonstrate the ability to remain stable financially or UCLA will not approve him for the procedure..
I have been lucky enough to have already received the life saving gift of a kidney transplant, so I know that for Michael this promises to bring back good health and the ability to work and get back to a normal life. Hopefully, Michael is just a few months away from this amazing gift, but over this next critical period Michael is in need of our support. Please donate what you can and any amount will be greatly appreciated. Also, please pass this request on to anyone you think might be able to offer help.
Thank you!
