Mexico Coronavirus (COVID-19) Healthcare PPE Relief Fund
My name is Dr. Carlo Michel Zeidenweber. I am a pediatric cardiologist in Boca Raton, Florida. I was born and raised in Mexico City. I have many years of experience in my field after being trained in Mexico and through reputable programs in the United States including Emory University, Miami Children’s Hospital, and Denver Children’s Hospital. My background gives me a great perspective on what is happening in my country of origin.
As the world battles this horrific pandemic, I have witnessed how unprepared we really are, in a first-world-country, for this pandemic. It got me thinking about my home. If this was what I was seeing here, what would happen there? Misinformation, equipment shortage, faulty testing, not enough beds, and a deficiency in trained professionals taking care of the patients, were just a few examples of what I had seen. Was this really happening in the country with the most resources in the world, the United States?
Mexico is in trouble, potentially heading towards a humanitarian crisis. It's healthcare system was already facing severe shortages even before this pandemic started. More than half of the population cannot afford to stay at home. There is severe misinformation and the “social distancing” concept has not been enforced or implemented appropriately. We are already starting to hear heart-breaking stories, and the pandemic hasn’t even fully hit. Even though the Mexican healthcare workers are resilient and always willing to help, they are faced with very real fears. They fear getting sick themselves and/or passing it on to their loved ones. They are not protected and we cannot count on the Mexican government to fix the problem.
My project is simple. Get the healthcare workers that need it most their very own, personal protective equipment (PPE). We will skip the “middle man” and get N-95 masks to as many of these doctors as possible. They will be protected for what is to come.
I have decided to partner with a dear friend, Rina Gittler MD, Founder of The Alma Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, providing resources for cancer survivors. The foundation has become one of the main distributors of personal protective equipment around Mexic during the current COVID-19 pandemic. The PPE is given directly to the healthcare workers that need it the most.
The healthcare workers want to be protected, and we have a way to protect them. We can acquire the N-95 masks and distribute them quickly and efficiently. Each mask costs $4. One healthy doctor can save hundreds of patients. In Mexico, if there aren’t enough doctors and nurses, and huge numbers of people get sick simultaneously in large waves, there simply won’t be enough of anything to care for them. There is a risk of a total system collapse.
