Support Horace on His Journey with MSA
Donation protected
My name is Sylvia Lee, and I’m doing fundraising for my brother Horace Miller. Horace is 57 years old and has no prior sickness or health issues. He has been sick for a while now and has progressively gotten worse. It first started as what appeared to be a stroke, his posture was off, and he began to lose his balance which resulted in many falls and numerous visits to ER as much as three times per week. After several hospitalizations and Doctor visits, they couldn’t find anything wrong with him, which was rather strange. All his labs, CT scan, and MRI showed nothing. First, they thought it was Parkinson’s Disease, so they prescribed medication as a trial, but that didn’t work so they stopped the medication. Months went by without any treatment. He was later diagnosed with MSA ( Multiple System Atrophy) /parkinsonian type, a rare degenerative disease with many complications.
Some of those complications include:
- Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) so now he has a peg tube to get his daily nutrition.
- He has lost the ability to communicate effectively
- Bladder retention that requires an indwelling catheter
- He has lost all muscle mass and strength making him immobile and confined to the bed
- He is prone to aspiration pneumonia and infections
There is NO cure for this disease.
Caring for himself has become difficult as the disease progresses rather quickly. Horace does not have medical insurance to provide a care giver for him or to be placed in a Rehab Facility( insurance only cover incontinent supplies). As his caretaker, it isn't easy to give him the constant care he needs while maintaining my full-time job and caring for my youngest child and paying the bills. Horace needs 24hr care to assist him with personal grooming, tube feeding, medication, repositioning (to prevent pressure sores), baths, exercise, getting out of bed etc. Because of inadequate help, he spends most of his days in bed which only makes his condition much worse. These funds are required to cover medical expenses and home care services to provide a better quality of life for Horace as he continues to fight daily. It will cost approximately $450 or more per wk for a part time caregiver, this is just for a few hours per day. We are hoping to get enough to provide 24 care. All donations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your contribution, prayers, encouragement, and support. For any additional information or information regarding resources that may be helpful, don't hesitate to let me know.
