There aren't too many people in the world that make us laugh until it hurts, but Matthew Vargas is indeed such a person. A beloved son, brother, boyfriend, and friend, he is currently fighting for his life.
In the early morning of May 10th, Matthew's brother rushed him to the emergency room of Christus Santa Rosa Hospital- Westover Hills in San Antonio, TX. The doctors found him in a state of septic shock and subsequently sent him to the intensive care unit. The medical team intubated Matthew and placed him on a mechanical ventilator. The doctors then decided to perform continuous dialysis to protect his kidneys from his failing liver and administered numerous medications to eliminate the underlying infection. After several days of treatment, Matthew's condition failed to improve. Due to these reasons, the medical team at Christus Santa Rosa requested Matthew be transferred to the intensive care unit at Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital in San Antonio's medical center. In the afternoon of Friday, May 14th, paramedics transported him to Methodist for more specialized care.
Upon arrival at Methodist, doctors and nurses continued to search for and target the underlying infection. Matt remained intubated and on dialysis. As they had previously done at Christus, the Methodist medical team ordered more x-rays, body scans, echocardiograms, computed tomographies, and other tests to evaluate his status. Unfortunately, doctors speculate Matthew's liver will never recover to full functionality, and he will require a liver transplant soon to save his life. He remains in intensive care and continues to fight every day to see the next. We are all grateful to the doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals who assisted and continue to care for our beloved son, brother, and friend. We are also sincerely thankful to family and friends who have visited, called, and texted us in this time of distress.
Acknowledging the exorbitant costs that come with hospitalizations of this magnitude along with Matthew’s loss of compensation due to his inability to work, we are asking for help. If possible, please consider contributing what you can to assist with Matt's medical expenses. We understand this will be a long and grueling process, but we are hopeful he will recover and live a prosperous and happy life with your help. Thank you so much for your consideration and kindness during this difficult time. We all look forward to having the Matt we know and love back up and running soon. Take care and bless you all!
