Hartford Marathon for Matthew Powell

It's that time of year again. Race day, October 12, 2013, is getting closer and the preparations have begun. This time around I'm mixing it up. This time I'm running my first full marathon.

As I have for the past five years, I'll be dedicating this run to Matthew "Snowflake" Powell and raising money for the Matthew Powell Scholarship Fund. Powell passed away two days before my first half marathon in 2008. I made the exceptionally difficult decision of driving away from my friends and the funeral home to go home and get some rest before the race that I had been training for for over a year. Whenever I contemplate giving up, on every single run to this day, I think about how Matthew motivated me during my first race years ago.

Powell graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2008 with a degree in exercise science. A proud brother of the chi phi fraternity, there was nothing that he wouldn't do for his friends and brothers. Matt's tragic passing will always be a reminder that life is too short and that we must cherish every minute and everyone in it.

Please join me in my efforts and help me reach my fundraising goal of $1,500 to donate toward the Matthew Powell Scholarship at Carle Place High School in Carle Place, NY.

For Snowflake, always.
