Marsha's Bicentennial Boost $$

My name is Marsha Gray Carrington and I am the proud owner of Carrington Arts in beautiful downtown Sandusky Ohio. My art gallery has featured over 60 different artists since I opened my doors in October 2015, and my Friday evening Art Openings are always a source of excitement and enlightenment, as well as festive events for our community.  Many of you have attended all or most of the Openings at the gallery, and I appreciate your loyalty and support more than I can express.

Setting modesty aside for a moment, I am truly proud of the contribution Carrington Arts has brought to the culture and revitalization of downtown Sandusky, and my goal is to make each show better than the previous one.  I love living in Sandusky and being part of such a wonderful city. This year’s Bicentennial celebration is a great opportunity for me to give back to our community so I have decided to celebrate this event with a truly spectacular show.

Sandusky has a rich history with a wide variety of unique individuals and leaders, important industries and businesses, and fascinating events to recognize, but in my opinion the most lasting legacy over the past 200 years is its contribution to the Underground Railroad. One hundred fifty years ago fugitive slaves from the South were risking everything to make their way to freedom in the North, and Sandusky served as the last stop in achieving this dream. Our community had a number of truly courageous Abolitionists who provided safety to those brave souls and Carrington Arts aims to highlight this period in our history with a fabulous show featuring the art of Karen Hampton.

The name of Karen’s show that will be exhibited at Carrington Arts for the Bicentennial is “The Light of Freedom; Stories of African American Threads of My Family, Their Journeys Toward Freedom, and the Abolitionists.”  Her work is truly unique, compelling, inspiring, and educational.  The show runs June 8 - July 21. 2018. This is a must-see show!

In Karen’s words “As an artist of color, I have made a life long commitment to creating artwork that responds to the lives of my ancestors.  My lens is anthropology and I study my own genealogy. I travel in my ancestor’s footsteps, I walked the roads where they lived, explored the plantations where they were enslaved.  I am the storyteller.  As their medium I provide a vehicle for my ancestor’s spirits to transcend history and remain as historical memory.   My medium is cloth -- whether digitally printed, hand woven or aged linens -- pieces are imbued with the hopes and visions of African American lives, telling their stories from a maternal perspective.”

I operate Carrington Arts on a small town budget but strive to put on shows with a big city feeling.  This show is unquestionably my most challenging undertaking.  A show of this magnitude and an artist of Karen’s standing surpasses the normal expenses I usually incur, but I am determined to give Sandusky a show that will inspire and unite us as a community.  I need your help. This is a great opportunity for you to pay it forward.  I NEED A BOOST!  Any contribution you can make will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance for your generous BOOST.
