Marisa @WHEA - Environment Science

West Hawaii Explorations Academy is a school that is small in student size but large in Environment and Marine studies. The opportunity presented itself this past winter for Marisa to enter her name and student history in the lottery to be considered for enrollment for the 2015-2016 school year.

In March, we received notification that Marisa had won 1 of the 80 slots that were open for new students to attend WHEA The current school year enrollment is about 280 students attending 6th - 12th grade.

After, a short spring break to New Orleans and some extensive discussion regarding pros and cons, we sent her enrollment request on to the school. We then began our preparations to get ourselves to Hawaii by July. We have experienced many hurdles and challenges in the
last several months, however Marisa has finally arrived here in South Kona and is ready for her first day of school; Wednesday, July 30th. This is a phenomenon opportunity for her style of learning.

The school Marisa will be attending was established in 2001 and moved to a new location last year. The new location is on the technology campus of OTEC and Hawaii Energy Labs. The students are challenged within the open-air campus in the studies of Environmental and Marine Science. A healthy motto embraced here at WHEA is "No Child Left Indoors".

Marisa will be challenged in every regard through the collaboration of discovery-project based activities. As an upper-classman she needs to drop her "oars" and start "paddling". She mentioned to me the other day, as we drove around the island, "Mom, I'm going to treat this school like a job,” in which I commended her attitude.

At WHEA (see video at the end of this post), the students are recruited to lead, collaborate and participate with local efforts in many different community projects to address environmental concerns of the island. In addition to state requirements of general required education, and the (very embraced, by mother, i.e. Me) inquiry-based advisory project approach, a rigorous exercise in extensive research and writing is required of each student. She will work independent and within small groups using the evidence-base scientific approach.

Although, we will both work multiple jobs to live in a high-cost of living demography, we are in need of support. Please consider making a donation to help us find the right footing for our planned two year tour of the this incredible Big Island.

Additionally, we need words of encouragement! And when I return to the mainland, quarterly to see my clients, we need someone to come and be Marisa's companion. Please send me a message if you are interested. We are sending blessings already to Joe Long for coming the first leg, as I return to Oklahoma, August 3rd-11th.

Will you please join our campaign to allow this extraordinary experience in education to unfurl?

Mahalo for your prayers, thoughts, vibes,
