Marc is scheduled to undergo a month long treatment called Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation with Clinica Ruiz in Monterrey, Mexico. His treatment begins this April. HSCT is known as a novel therapy for autoimmune disorders, which provides the chance to stop progression of CIDP. In the United States, the treatment is only available through trials, it’s not covered by insurance, with out of pocket costs exceeding $125,000. The cost of the treatment in Mexico is $60,000 including medical care, travel and follow-ups. He will also need a family member there with him for the month as a caretaker and supporter. Our hope is to help offset the burden of the cost for their family!
In May 2019, Marc was diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disease called Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) which is an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Later in the year the disease quickly progressed further into a chronic disorder called Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP). They have exhausted every therapy available to slow progression, which has proven short term positive results that soon after plateau. Marc is dependent on a weekly subcutaneous immunoglobulin therapy which, we believe, has protected him from further relapses but with stagnant forward progression. With current blood donation shortages and the rising cost of the therapy, HSCT is his best choice to stop progression of the disease and ability to discontinue dependance on infusion therapies.
HSCT has an incredible success rate upwards of 93% to stop progression of CIDP, ending dependance on further therapies. HSCT is an intense chemotherapy based medical procedure that ablates the immune system and reboots it using your own stem cells harvested from your blood and bone marrow. Recovery is nothing short of intense and will require 3-6 months until his immune system is safely recovered. The Winchell’s are expecting their 2nd baby, a baby boy, in early August! We are hopeful that Marc’s youth and sheer will to overcome will lead to a speedy recovery to be ready to be a support for his family in August when baby is expected!
We so appreciate your love and support! Thank you!
