Mango Morning Post Covid19 Retreat

It is widely acknowledged that domestic abuse increased dramatically during the Covid19 pandemic. It  has been especially traumatic for domestic abuse survivors from the  African & Caribbean heritage community because the majority of mainstream services do not understand or cater for black women and girls affected by domestic or sexual abuse. This is especially true of the grassroots/Rastafarian and other communities that remain invisible in plain sight.

Why should you support?

I think we should all play a part in supporting the kind of diverse community that we want to live in, regardless to if we belong to that specific community or not. I do believe that most people feel the same. It isn't just about colour or culture, it's about equality and love. That's what makes a community great.

Sistah Space has struggled hard in this regard, offering a service that is not available anywhere else in the country. We found it difficult to obtain funding as the criteria set did not not take into account that our essential needs differed slightly from other cultures. Hair and skin products such as shea butter for skin and specific products for hair were not easily obtainable, especially for victims in lockdown.

The lighthearted video clip gives some insight into a community culture that is little known about or acknowledged in the wider community. It shows us contributing to the support of DV survivors during the pandemic and celebrating and enjoying  our historic African and Caribbean culture and music while in the process of supporting others.

For many black women affected by abuse it has been years since they have been able to relax and enjoy life free from abuse. This pandemic has pushed many to their absolute limit.

This fund seeks to hire a 17 seater minibus to take the survivors on a  'Mango Morning' (coffee morning with a twist) weekend trip in the countryside where they will stay at a property that can accommodate up to 20 people. Survivors and their children will be able to enjoy a 'home' with massive garden in a safe environment. volunteers will give them makeovers and support them back into the community.  We will share the varied cultural experience with each other and feedback to our supporters

Your generosity will help us pay for a

*minibus and driver
*Accommodation hire
*food
*volunteers travel expenses
*small gift bags with specialist hair & skin products for 20 victims and their children. (new donations of these items accepted)

We hope to be able to do this in October/November 2020 subject to Covid19 restrictions being lifted. If those dates are not advisable or available, we will make this a pre or post Xmas occasion.
