Manny needs a kidney transplant!!!
Our friend Manny (ManBahadur Tamang) lives in Kathmandu, Nepal, and desperately needs a kidney transplant. We have known Manny since 1998 when we met him as a shy 14-year-old boy who had been rescued from living with his father in one of Nepal’s prisons. He had begun school for the very first time at age 12. He has since completed school through Class 12 and earned a Bachelor’s in Business. For several years, he has supervised a number of young adult Nepalis who were also rescued from prison and are now pursuing their education. Manny is currently working in a bank, and had almost completed his MBA when he was suddenly diagnosed with kidney failure about 10 months ago. Medicines have not controlled the deterioration which has reached Stage 5. The last resort of dialysis or kidney transplant is required.
Manny’s father has not been in his life very much and lives and works in a remote area hours away from Kathmandu, but he has thankfully agreed to donate a kidney. However, even in Nepal, the costs of the operations, the follow-up care and the lifetime anti-rejection drug regimen are prohibitive. His doctor in Nepal tells us the surgeries will cost about US$7000, and we estimate the follow up treatment to cost about $2000. The costs of the drugs to prevent organ rejection are estimated at $200 per month in the beginning and hopefully will continue at a lower cost for the rest of Manny's life. For 10 years, that comes to roughly $20,000. The total estimated cost of $29,000 is modest by western standards, but way beyond reach for Manny, who earns about $160 each month at the bank!
This dear friend has risen above the severe challenges of life in Nepal only to confront what is clearly the greatest challenge of all. Will you help us to save our friend’s life?
We will be happy to answer any questions about ourselves, about Manny, or about the process.
