Last September, I visited Zambia to work at a hospital in a remote town, Macha. While I was there, I really came to admire the people I met, how they stretched every resource including themselves to take care of patients. We did surgeries clipping together torn drapes to maintain a sterile field, using only my iPhone light when we didn't have electricity. Women labored on garbage bags and then cleaned up behind themselves less than an hour after they had given birth to make room for the next patient! The list goes on and on, and every evening I went home moved by the discrepancy between our two worlds - trying to find a way to overcome some of these gaps.
Fortunately, there are solutions. Project Cure is a US based organization, that surveys facilities like these and then matches their needs with redundant supplies from organizations here. I need your help to gather the funds needed to ship these supplies out to Zambia. Each 40 foot container shipped carries about $400,000 worth of supplies and costs about $20,000 to ship. My goal is to get two such containers out there as soon as possible. Any leftover funds will go toward building badly needed housing to bring in necessary staff to run the hospital.
I feel confident in asking for your support, having been there myself and knowing your donations will be honestly utilized. Now more than ever, we recognize that humanity is interconnected in infinite ways; and that illness, poverty or the efforts we put against them have no boundaries. I will be eternally grateful for your support.
