Meals on Wheels is on the Move!

"This is a lifeline for me!"   "I don't know what I'd do without this."  "I can stay in my home."   These are just a few of the quotes from clients of Meals on Wheels of Peters Township, which has been a staple of our community for over four decades. Our volunteer-driven  program provides nutritious, home-delivered meals to senior citizens and other homebound individuals, helping them stay healthy and safe in their homes. For almost ten years we have operated out of our facility above the Peters Township Fire Department, which was renovated for our needs by a generous benefactor in 2008. Because the township is not renewing our lease, we have to move to a new facility before the end of 2017.
After a long search process, we have signed a long-term lease to rent the former Sirena Taco restaurant in the Donaldson’s Crossroads shopping center. we are thrilled to have decided on our new home and are now moving forward rapidly with plans to get there. The move will be very costly. We are estimating at least $65,000 in design, renovation, and moving expenses to relocate our facility. A large portion of this cost is in the dismantling, moving, and re-installation of our walk-in cooler and freezer, which requires the services of a contractor with a crane for the roof equipment.

We want to continue our mission of helping senior citizens stay healthy and safe in their homes with nutritious, home-delivered meals. We serve anywhere from 160 to 200 clients daily in a wide circle of communities, including Venetia, McMurray, Canonsburg, Houston, Finleyville, Lawrence, Hendersonville, Muse, and parts of Eighty-Four, Bridgeville/S. Fayette, Upper St. Clair, and Bethel Park. Nearly 250 volunteers both young and old contribute their time and talents each year to make this possible.

Increases in life expectancy in America mean most of us will find ourselves with the struggles that accompany aging. We may experience a decline in mobility or health, stripping away our independence. Many of us will be alone with family members spread out across the globe. Meals on Wheels programs like ours provide a nutritious meal, a friendly visit, and a safety check to our area seniors. Our seniors who receive daily Meals on Wheels deliveries credit them with:
** making them feel better
**helping them eat healthier
**making them feel less lonely

Your donation will help us continue this level of support for our present and future clients without skipping a beat during the relocation process!

What sets our Meals on Wheels program apart from many others is the high quality of meals we are able to serve for a modest fee. We are able to provide a meals for 1 year for roughly the same cost as 1 day in the hospital! Even so, some seniors or disabled individuals on fixed incomes struggle to afford the fees, and we never turn someone away for lack of ability to pay. Even with rising food costs and our expensive move on the horizon, we remain committed to that mission.

Our board and staff have been diligently applying for grants and planning fundraising activities to prepare for these expenses, but we also need the help of individual donors to meet our goal. Please share this with your friends and family, or anyone who cares about the well-being of our senior citizen community! Every donation large or small will help.

Please help our MOW continue to help seniors!   You can make a HUGE difference in their lives!!!!
