On October 8, 2020, Our beautiful mother, Luz Omaira, was found unresponsive in her home and she was then rushed to Norwalk Hospital where she had to be intubated immediately. Our mother went into cardiac arrest and due to loss of oxygen her brain did not survive this tragedy. We remained as hopeful as possible till the end as we had been down this road too many times. Our warrior, Luz Omaira, always made it and we never thought this would be her last battle. We were told everything was getting worse and that at this point doctors did all they could possibly do for her but it was too late. She had already damaged more than half of her brain due to the lack of oxygen along with other organs failing.. She was sadly going to be left in a vegetative state for the rest of her life, something we all had very clear she never wanted.
We all had to make the hardest decision of our lives on October 10, 2020, which was disconnecting our mother from all forms of life support as per her request in prior conversations about this topic. This was talked about with her on many occasions in the past since our mother was diabetic and had been intubated in the past for a few months. She made it very clear that depending on machines was not the life she wanted at all and that we had to respect her decision if that day ever came where she was left in a vegetative state. We never actually thought the day would come or that we would be left to make this decision, yet alone, continue life without our beloved mother/grandmother.
We all had to say goodbye to the women who gave us life...our best friend.. It was so unexpected as we were sure she was going to make it this time too. It is breaking our heart and we aren't sure if we have even processed this tremendous loss. She was an amazing single- mother and even better grandmother.
Unfortunately she did not have life insurance or any form of savings to cover the expenses that are to follow. Our mother always said she wanted to be brought to Colombia, her native country, where all her siblings and father reside (picture below). She wanted to be left to rest alongside her beloved mother if the day ever came. We want to give our mom the best goodbye we can offer but unfortunately that costs a lot of money. We are asking for any donations and prayers at this time...no matter how small, anything will be greatly appreciated by us all. We do plan to travel to Colombia as a family in the near future to make her wishes come true. Her family in Colombia is devastated and are all waiting to receive us there to give their sister/daughter a proper farewell.
Our mother was the light of our lives. She meant absolutely everything to us.. our hearts still ache, her presence will be greatly missed by so many! Although we are apart physically her spirit will live on forever in our hearts and those whose lives were touched by her in one way or another. We will keep your loving, caring, funny memories with us to get us through each day until we meet again....
