For those who haven’t been able to follow what happened to our Mom, here’s a recap…
Sometime in 2017, we found out that a simple mouth sore which didn't go away for weeks, became clusters of mouth sores that turned out to be tongue carcinoma.
After the gastrostomy, the series of immunotherapy and radiation therapy until early 2018, plus the fervent prayers and financial support from family, relatives, friends, and some who wish to remain anonymous, the tumor thankfully did not progress.
It’s a blessing that our Mom has been almost pain-free for the past three years. Fast forward to 2021, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mom could hardly open her mouth sometime in July. She could no longer eat solid food.
After a series of lab works and visits to her EENT/surgeon and her new oncologist (her previous oncologist sadly succumbed to Covid last year), we received the heartbreaking news that our Mom has a cancer relapse.
Aside from the regular Covid-19 RT-PCR tests (including for one of the siblings who accompanies her to the Cancer Center because a companion’s swab test is required as well), the continued oral meds and lab works, Mom has started undergoing immunotherapy cancer treatment with a 3-week interval.
With everything that’s happening around the world, we still hope that you can help us fund our Mom’s cancer treatment as she fights her cancer relapse. Thank you very much in advance for anything you can share.
Stay healthy and keep safe always.

We, the children of Lulu, are requesting for your help in our Mom’s battle with cancer. Our parents would never ask others to help in this way so, we are doing it for them. We hope that the global community can help us fund our Mom’s cancer treatment and recovery. Any amount is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for anything you can share, and we wish you the best of health always.

Last October 2017, our Mom, Lourdes (who is fondly called Lulu), was diagnosed with tongue sarcoma, an oral cancer. She had clusters of mouth sores and could barely eat or talk. She had to take an indefinite leave from teaching at a reputable university.
Mom’s first hospitalization in October 2017, which included an MRI, ultrasound of lymph node, additional biopsy test, 2D echo, ECG, and many more tests, cost over USD1,300. After a series of consultations and deliberations, Mom finally agreed to undergo gastrostomy in preparation of the effects of radiation as treatment for her cancer.
Mom’s second hospitalization for the gastrostomy operation last November 18, 2017 cost another USD1,200.
The treatment for Mom’s cancer include targeted therapy (a form of chemotherapy) and radiation therapy. She started undergoing targeted therapy last November 27, 2017 which is done once a week and costs over USD10,000 for two months. Fortunately, our Mom’s oncologist who is her cousin, was able to enroll her in a financial assistance program for cancer patients, which resulted to slashing the cost in half. We are then paying the 50% which is over USD5,000. Aside from cost of the treatment, the weekly hospital bill for two months at the cancer center was USD150 per week.
Last December 04, 2017, mom started undergoing the IMRT (intensity-modulated radiotherapy) and IGRT (image-guided radiation therapy), which was done from Monday to Friday, excluding holidays, and costs around USD3,000.
We were told that the said IMRT and IGRT machine is the only one available in the Visayas region of the Philippines, which explains its high cost. Other hospitals only have a 3D radiation therapy machine.
Mom had to battle more challenges along the way, such as the breakdown of the radiation therapy machine, and the replacement of her stomach tube on December 18 and 22 due to some complications and infection.
It was on December 22 when Mom started to feel the side effects of the radiation kicking in. It became very painful for Mom to swallow food and water, which led to the regular tube feeding.
Towards the end of January 2018, Mom had lost a lot of weight since she was no longer able to eat. The doctor then advised Mom to do a three-hour interval tube feeding using a special formulated milk, which costs around USD500 per month. As of February 25, Mom continues taking the milk and has gained five pounds in a month’s time.
We truly appreciate whatever amount you may be able to pitch in. Thank you again and may your generous hearts be blessed.
