My name is Dante Drolet and I am in the sixth grade.  Last year my fifth grade teacher Ms. Julie Boeshans nominated me to go to the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C.

 This is an opportunity to learn how to be a leader.  To quote my acceptance letter, the benefits of attending the JrNYLC are “...discovering how to enhance the essential leadership skills that you already posses and more importantly, learning how to apply those skills immediately upon your return home.”

I will join middle school students around the country and learn about leadership through American history at the National Museum of American History.  We will visit monuments and learn about them.  We will also hear from a man named Anthony Robles, who was born with only one leg, but became the 2011 NCAA National Wrestling Champion.  

This will also hopefully change me in a way that has only happened once before.  I went to the YMCA surf camp for a week without my parents.  It was just me and 7 or 8 other guys.  When I came back, my dad said it changed me.  I think it was because I had never been away from my family and just with other guys.  Hopefully this will do the same.  

So why am I writing this letter?  I am writing this letter because going there is not free.  I have been given an opportunity and I need your help.  Thankfully, the conference is not till next summer, so we have lots of time.  Even donating one dollar will help.  We have a goal of 5,000 dollars to reach, so any help will be awesome.

So why should you help me?  I think that you should help me because this conference will help me do things that I didn’t know how to do or I didn’t know how to approach those things.  Maybe in the future I will become somebody important in the government, like maybe a governor, or maybe even the president!  If or when you see me all those years later on tv, you can think, hey, isn’t that the kid who I helped to go to that conference thingy? Then you think, wow, I helped him do that.  Wouldn’t that be cool?  Knowing you helped the guy who became president?  I thought so.  So that is something in return you will get.

Another thing in return is happiness.  A while ago, I bought my friend a phone case out of the blue.  It was the happiest I’ve ever seen her.  Seeing her that happy made me feel happier than I’ve ever felt before.  And that is a very good feeling.  So I think that you will be very happy to know you let me achieve this accomplishment.
