We are back to work albeit with no contract. Negotiations will be going on as we return to work. Our coworkers are asking us to come back as the hospitals are a mess with broken equipment, we hear them. As of now please do not donate to our fund any longer. We do want to thank everyone for your donations. We had some delicious lunches and when it got cold the propane for our heaters made it bearable. Mark
Hello, my name is Mark Seanez and I am a member of IUOE Local 39 who represent the Stationary and Biomedical Engineers at Santa Clara Kaiser.
As you may or may not know, we are currently on the longest strike against Kaiser Permanente in its history. We are currently on day 91 and are manning a 24/7 strike line. We are 700 strong who work at Kaiser hospitals though out the bay area, Sacramento and Fresno areas.
The groups that represent Stationary Engineers are Facility Engineers who maintain that the hospital is in working order such as fire life and safety, HVAC, plumbing and electrical. Shared Services Engineers who maintain, calibrate and repair all equipment related to X-ray, Nuclear Medicine, Catheterization Lab, Mammography, Interventional Radiology Lab, Ophthalmology/Lasers and Ultrasound. Clinical Systems Intergrated Engineers who maintain workstations and servers. Instrumentation Engineers who maintain and repair all critical patient monitoring devices.
Local 39 has been in negotiations with the Kaiser brass since April of this year, our contract expired on September 17. We are currently in month 9 of negotiations and things are progressing very slowly. All we are asking for is competitive wages compared to other hospital engineers in the bay area, no more no less. As you know living in the bay area is one of the most expensive places to live in the nation. Kaiser keeps posting on social media that our wages are competitive with other engineers throughout the country. Well to be honest, you can’t compare living in the bay area to living in other parts of the country. During the height of the pandemic, we were labeled “Essential Workers” by the hospital and were informed “You must report to work”. Without hesitation we all reported to work because it was our duty to keep the hospital in optimum working order for you, Our Members. Since the start of the pandemic Kaiser has pocketed 11.4 billion dollars. This is our “Thank You” from Kaiser for our dedication.
After being out for so long we have decided to open up this GoFundMe page to help out with our expenses while being on the strike line. We will use your donation for our ongoing needs that include lunches, hand sanitizer, snacks, propane for our heaters, hand warmers, paper plates, ice, soft drinks, water, fruit and for items needed for us to maintain our strike line.
We are in a David vs Goliath fight and we will not be pushed around by Kaiser!
Thank you in advance for your donation.
