Livro Aberto is a non-profit, Mozambican, grassroots literacy organization opening books and doors for children in Mozambique. Livro Aberto not only provides access to books for free through our library and free books programs, we provide weekly programming that fosters reading and writing skills for children in low income areas surrounding Maputo.
Livro Aberto started out as a small community literacy initiative in 2007 that grew into the library that is open to the public and literacy association that it has become today. Thanks to the gracious donations of books and used materials Livro Aberto was able to open the Livro Aberto Children's Library, Language and Literacy Center in 2015. The library and center are based in a
public park in Maputo which provides the opportunity to attract more families, reach more students and children through our free access to books, literacy models, print media, and free educational activities for children. The library is an important mechanism by which Livro Aberto sustainably supports all of our community literacy programming in low income areas around Maputo.
Livro Aberto is not externally funded, but has grown through the hard work and dedication of Livro Aberto's small number of Mozambican staff and volunteers. Due to the use of recycled resources, Livro Aberto’s overhead and physical costs are few for the Library and community literacy programs. What is challenging Livro Aberto’s advance towards complete sustainability is constant rain damage due to ineffective library construction (i.e., the absence of waterproof roofs).
The library was constructed of recycled materials including old shipping containers, used tires and donated mattresses for reading areas. Our innovative use of used resources has come to challenge Livro Aberto and our programming every time it rains. Books, shelving, wooden floors and literacy materials are damaged on a monthly basis causing financial setbacks in our mission to promote literacy for children.
Raise the Roof for Livro Aberto aims to construct roofs over all three shippingcontainers. The money raised will fund roof construction out of durable metal sheeting, steel frames and rain gutters preventing rain from entering the used containers and safeguarding our books, structures, materials and programming.
Livro Aberto aims to bring empowerment and enjoyment through literacy for children throughout Mozambique via our community literacy programs, mobile libraries, and language/literacy support. We are doing just that!
Help Livro Aberto continue it's focused efforts on promoting literacy for children as opposed to constant library repairs due to rain damage.
