Thank you so much for your interest in our nonprofit and reading about our goals for the future.
The Little Farm Rescue and Sanctuary is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 2018. We work with the most vulnerable animals, including those abandoned, abused, neglected and slaughter bound. We provide them with lifelong care and advocate for more compassionate lifestyles for the greater good. Over the last three years we have taken in and assisted in the placement of over 250 animals and assisted in evacuating our communities during the recent Woolsey fires. From dogs to horses, sheep and goats and all those in between; we work hard to make sure we are advocating and helping in any and every way possible when we're needed.
For the last three years, the nonprofits sanctuary space has been spread out on 4 different properties in order to continue rescuing and growing. We lease land, board at horse facilities, and have completely reorganized our home to make the most space for each of our rescued residents to live and thrive. The logistics weren't ideal and we have had a lot of additional costs being spread out but we made it work while we looked for our dream space.
In the fall of 2020 we sold our home and put everything towards the purchase of a farm with 115 acres of both farmland and woods in Machipongo, Virginia. Our hearts exploded at the opportunity to move our existing animals to this new space and to see all the good we can continue to do with that much acreage.
Once we safely have everyone at the new property, we will reopen to the public and our community. Our educational programs offer an opportunity for guests of all ages to gently meet our residents, learn about animal agriculture and regenerative farming and its lasting effects on our health and planet. We offer opportunities to show how we all can make small more compassionate changes in our daily lives for the greater good
We will be dedicating a section of the property to regenerative farming practices and protecting the 50 acres of undeveloped woods that surround to help ensure that we stabilize the soil, protect against erosion and the lands capacity to store water and draw down carbon while supporting all biological activity including wildlife habitats. Additionally, it will be an opportunity for visitors to reconnect with nature, a sanctuary for all.
In order to safely move our current permanent residents, we will need to fence the property and build two new barns to house everyone. We have until the end of March.
After contacting several different companies and receiving multiple estimates, we found the perfect one for us and the costs for both barns and fencing is $175,000.00. It's a BIG goal, but I know we can do it for the animals.
The horses will each have their own stall, safe and protected from the elements. It will also allow us to continue to take the best care of all 16 horses and donkeys, with their individual needs both medically and any supplemental care. Our sheep, goats, and alpacas will also have their new barn space to continue to thrive and live their best lives.
Our goals:
Immediately we will need-
• Horse barn and fenced pasture
• Goat, sheep, and alpaca barn and fenced pasture
Longer term goals for 2021-2022-
• Storage barn for all hay and feed
• An intake/medical barn that will allow us to quarantine all new intakes and give them adequate time to be assessed, treated and heal.
• Horse/stock trailer purchase
• Storage barn for our equipment safe
• Tractor and quad purchase
•Agriculture and land development for regenerative organic farming.
