In Memory of a Great Teacher and Friend

The Alcoa High School Class of 1968 requests your help in raising money to name an English classroom in the new Alcoa High School, which opened in the fall of 2015, in memory of Linda Carol Roberts. Ms. Roberts died unexpectedly Sunday, October 23, 2016, at her home. She was 77 years old.
Ms. Roberts taught junior English at AHS from 1963 to 1968. We ask that the classes of 1963 through 1969 support this effort, and all classes that participate will be named on the plaque which designates the room as the Linda Carol Roberts Memorial Classroom.
Ms. Roberts was a beloved teacher and inspiring role model. As a teacher of literature, she shared her passion for the written word and challenged students to develop deeper understanding of the works they read. She was also an excellent teacher of composition, and students who had Ms. Roberts were confident and well prepared to succeed in college English.
In addition to being an exceptional teacher, Ms. Roberts was very involved in student life, serving as class sponsor and supporting students in athletics and other extracurricular activities. Her enthusiasm for life, beautiful smile, and positive nature influenced all who met her.
After leaving Alcoa, Ms. Roberts earned her master’s in library science at the University of Tennessee and served as librarian at Maryville High School for many years, until she retired to care for her aging parents.
Many former students maintained contact with her and developed personal friendships and professional relationships that were important to them throughout their lives.
In addition to her work in education, Ms. Roberts was a dedicated member of First United Methodist Church of Alcoa. She spent countless hours raising money for and supporting Henderson Settlement in Kentucky, an outreach center providing support and services for the families in one of the most impoverished areas in the United States. Any money raised in this campaign beyond the $5,000 classroom sponsorship goal will be donated to Henderson Settlement. Ms. Roberts was also an election poll worker and an avid Lady Vols fan.
A classroom at Alcoa High School is a fitting and lasting way to honor the memory of Ms. Roberts, as students and parents now and in the future will know her name and recognize the tremendous influence she had on former students of our Alma Mater.
Please contribute to this effort. It would be wonderful to have the funds available and the plaque ready for the opening of the 2017-2018 school year, if not before.
