My wife and I have known Dave Magnenat and his lovely wife Maryjane for nearly 20 years now. We met through our youngest daughters when they became friends in preschool. They have since become our dearest friends, confidants, family really. They are like a set of surrogate parents to our daughters, as we have become to theirs.
Now that you know why we care so much about Dave, let me tell you why many others care as well.
Dave has spent most of his professional career as the first responder of first responders...designing, maintaining and operating emergency response communications systems so the rest of us can call 911 when things get scary. He spent nearly two decades with CenCom, Kitsap County's 911 system, eventually becoming their Deputy Director.
The last eight years Dave has worked for a consulting firm out of Seattle helping other counties and municipalities develop and upgrade their emergency response systems. He is a man who has devoted his life to making us all safe.
Late last year, Dave was diagnosed with a rare and very aggressive form of leukemia. Thanks to Harrison Hospital, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and everyone at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Dave has been responding well to treatment and has a fighting chance. Now the real work begins as he prepares for a full bone marrow transplant beginning in February 2014.
Though we all confidently hope and pray he will survive this ordeal, it is the financial burden to Dave and his family we fear will take as a great a toll as the disease. The out-of-pocket costs between non-covered medical expenses and loss of income due to his illness will mount to around $100,000 over the next year.
Please help us help this wonderful man, our dear friend, and his family make it through this tragic episode in their lives without losing everything they have worked so hard for over the years. Any amount is appreciated by Dave, his family and all of his friends who feel so lucky to know him.
Please come back and visit Dave's page here at GoFundMe as we add more and keep you all apprised of his progress.
