Leslie’s Hope. Well Women in Ghana

In January 2024 I will be traveling to Ghana for three weeks to work on a series of women’s health projects and to learn about Ghana’s healthcare system. I will be part of a group of public health students, physician assistants, and a few doctors. Working side by side with Ghanaian healthcare providers and public health workers I will promote health and well-being in the Akwapim South region of Eastern Ghana, with a special focus on cervical cancer screening.

In Ghana, only 3% of women eligible for screening (those Pap smear tests women in the US get regularly from the age of 21-65) actually receive it. We plan to improve those numbers and treat women at risk of getting cancer in the future. Our Ghanaian team members include Rebecca, a Physician Assistant with expertise in women’s health, and Emily, a District Directorate with the Ghanaian Ministry of Health. This amazing trip opportunity arose in connection to my recent enrollment in UMass Amherst’s Certificate in Global Health program.
