Help Bring Leo Home

It is with deep sadness that we share the sudden passing of our dear colleague and friend, Leonardo Sandu, who left us far too soon, at only 57 years of age.

In Loving Memory of Leonardo Sandu

Leo was little bit more than just a colleague to us, he was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, a loyal friend, and a hardworking member of our team. His unexpected passing left a deep void in all our lives and mostly in the lives of his wife Ema, his daughter Tania and his granddaughter Olivia.

Leo’s journey started when he left Romania during the communist era, driven by the hope of creating a better future for himself and his family. It was leap of faith and a sacrifice he made, but through determination and courage he managed to build a beautiful life in the UK, the place he proudly called home for more than 23 years. He always worked tirelessly, not only for his own future, but for his wife Ema and daughter Tania who brought him endless pride and joy and a lovely granddaughter Olivia.

He was always proud when he spoke of his family and share his personal moments and stories with us. Everything he did, every sacrifice, all the working hours, was with them in mind. His love and devotion to them were obvious to all who knew him.

Since joining the Kelly Formwork team on the HS2 Area East project in 2024, Leo proved to be an essential part of the team. He worked as a steel fixer across all sections of the project, helping to build structures with complex designs and carrying out some of the hardest tasks. No matter how challenging the work was at times, he never complained but was always looked for solutions. His work quality was always high and he was proactive in everything he did. He brought not just his skills and effort, but also his humour, kindness and warmth, qualities that made him a good friend and a colleague everyone could rely on. He always tried to keep a good spirit within the team, reminding his colleagues not to worry too much about the hard or difficult moments, because they would always pass and better ones would surely come. His lifted people’s moods and made the toughest days feel a bit lighter.

The last impression Leo left with us was one that truly reflected his character. He was formally recognised on site for his safety, quality, and hard work by receiving the 'Acts of Integrity Award – One Team Spirit'. The award citation noted: ‘He is knowledgeable, keen to help where he can, hardworking, and a pleasure to work with and to have as part of the HS2 Area East Team.’ Along with the award, he also received a voucher. He was very proud and happy about the recognition, but in his typical selfless way, he strongly insisted that the voucher should be given to a charity rather than kept for himself. That moment showed the compassionate and generous person he was.

Sadly, in June, Leo was rushed to the hospital for an emergency procedure and was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive type of cancer. Heartbreaking for him and the family but even in those painful and uncertain moments, he kept fighting and remained optimistic. News of a potential treatment brought hope, but the costs were exorbitant and the NHS would not cover it. Still, Leo believed, and we believed with him. We believed that he could start the treatment and begin the fight of his life. Plans were made to raise the money and everyone waited and praying for his health to improve enough for his body to withstand the battle. But time was not on Leo’s side. He was never given the chance to begin the biggest fight of his life… and before he could, time ran out, and the bells rang.

“My dear friend and colleague, it was a privilege to know you. For over ten years, we shared our days, our challenges, and even life’s sorrows. As we spoke in your final hours, I hold onto your words, that we will meet again one day at the “little gate.”

Leo’s journey ended far earlier than it ever should have. The worst news came in and before it reached us, his family had to endure the most painful truth anyone can hear. Their world was broken in an instant and ours soon after. His family now faces the painful task of taking him home to Romania so he may rest in peace among his loved ones. The costs of repatriation and funeral arrangements are overwhelming and a burden no grieving family should have to carry alone.

“Leo was the light in the darkness, he had a warm voice in the midst of chaos, and the gentlest gaze that soothed my fears. I loved him quietly but deeply… He is gone, yet he will live forever within me.”

We are reaching out now, not only as colleagues, but as a loving community that cared deeply for Leo. By supporting this cause, we can show his wife Ema, his daughter Tania, and his granddaughter Olivia the same respect, love, and kindness that Leo always showed to us.

Ajutați-ne să-l aducem pe Leo acasă

Cu mare durere în suflet vă anunțăm trecerea neașteptată din viață a dragului nostru coleg și prieten, Leonardo Sandu, care s-a stins mult prea devreme, la doar 57 de ani.

În amintirea lui Leonardo Sandu

Leo a fost mai mult decât un coleg pentru noi. A fost un soț iubitor și devotat, un tată și bunic mândru, un prieten loial și un om muncitor, pe care te puteai baza oricând. Plecarea lui bruscă a lăsat un gol imens în viețile noastre, dar mai ales în inimile soției sale, Ema, ale fiicei sale, Tania, și ale nepoțelei sale, Olivia.

Povestea lui Leo a început atunci când, în vremurile grele ale comunismului, a ales să plece din România cu speranța de a construi un viitor mai bun pentru familia lui. A fost un pas uriaș, un sacrificiu, dar cu curaj și determinare și-a clădit o viață frumoasă în Marea Britanie, țară pe care a numit-o cu mândrie „acasă” mai bine de 23 de ani. A muncit fără oprire, nu doar pentru el, ci mai ales pentru cei dragi, Ema, Tania și Olivia, care îi aduceau mereu mândrie și bucurie.

Vorbea mereu cu drag despre familie, împărtășea amintiri și povești cu noi. Tot ce făcea, fiecare oră de muncă, fiecare sacrificiu, era pentru ei. Toți cei care l-au cunoscut au simțit cât de mult îi iubea și cât de devotat le era.

Din 2024, de când s-a alăturat echipei Kelly Formwork pe proiectul HS2 Area East, Leo a devenit un om de bază. A lucrat ca fierar-betonist în toate secțiunile proiectului, construind structuri dificile și realizând cele mai grele sarcini. Oricât de complicată era lucrarea, nu s-a plâns niciodată, căuta soluții și ridica moralul colegilor. Munca lui era de calitate, era mereu activ și gata să ajute. Pe lângă priceperea și efortul său, aducea în echipă și umor, bunătate și căldură. Reușea să înveselească atmosfera și să facă și zilele grele mai ușor de dus.

Ultima amintire pe care ne-a lăsat-o a arătat exact cine era el. A fost recunoscut oficial pe șantier pentru siguranța, calitatea și munca sa prin acordarea distincției ‘Acts of Integrity Award – One Team Spirit’. În motivarea premiului s-a menționat: “Este un om priceput, dornic să ajute ori de câte ori poate, harnic și o plăcere să lucrezi cu el și să îl ai ca parte a echipei HS2 Area East.” Odată cu premiul, a primit și un voucher. Era mândru și bucuros, dar, în felul lui generos, a insistat ca voucherul să fie donat unei organizații caritabile, nu păstrat pentru el. A fost încă o dovadă a sufletului său bun.

Din păcate, în luna iunie, Leo a ajuns de urgență la spital, unde a primit un diagnostic crunt, o formă rară și agresivă de cancer. Vestea a fost devastatoare, dar chiar și atunci a continuat să lupte și să rămână optimist. O posibilitate de tratament a adus speranță, însă costurile erau uriașe și imposibil de acoperit prin NHS. Chiar și așa, Leo a crezut, iar noi am crezut alături de el. Ne-am pregătit să strângem fonduri și am așteptat cu speranța că sănătatea lui se va îmbunătăți pentru a putea începe lupta vieții lui. Din păcate, timpul nu a mai avut răbdare… și clopotele au bătut.

„Dragul meu prieten și coleg, a fost un privilegiu să te cunosc. Mai bine de zece ani am împărțit zilele, provocările și chiar necazurile vieții. Așa cum mi-ai spus în ultimele ore, păstrez în suflet cuvintele tale, că ne vom revedea într-o zi ‘la portiță.”

Viața lui Leo s-a încheiat mult mai devreme decât ar fi trebuit. Familia lui a primit cea mai dureroasă veste pe care cineva o poate primi, iar lumea lor s-a prăbușit într-o clipă. Acum, ei trebuie să ducă povara de a-l aduce acasă, în România, pentru ca Leo să se odihnească în pace lângă cei dragi. Costurile repatrierii și ale înmormântării sunt foarte mari și nicio familie nu ar trebui să treacă singură printr-o asemenea greutate.

„Leo a fost lumina mea în întuneric, vocea caldă în mijlocul haosului și privirea blândă ce îmi domolea temerile. L-am iubit în tăcere, dar profund… A plecat, dar va trăi veșnic în mine.”

Ne adresăm vouă, nu doar ca foști colegi și prieteni, ci ca o comunitate unită care l-a iubit și l-a respectat pe Leo. Sprijinindu-i familia, putem arăta soției sale, Ema, fiicei sale, Tania, și nepoțelei sale, Olivia, aceeași dragoste și bunătate pe care Leo ni le-a arătat tuturor.

„Mi-am pierdut mult prea devreme tatăl… Durerea nu vine în valuri, ci e o tăcere care nu va trece niciodată.”

Acum este momentul să fim uniți prieteni, colegi, dar și cei pentru care Leo a muncit și pe care i-a reprezentat cu mândrie, pentru a împărți povara acestei încercări și a-l ajuta să facă ultimul drum spre casă.
