Latinx Mural Project: Past, Present, Future

Donation protected
Carpinteria is a small California beach town beloved by its residents, as well as visitors. But the town has a dark history. For 27 years, from 1920 to 1947, Carpinteria was segregated. A "Mexicans Only" elementary school and the right side of the movie theatre and section of the beach were designated for the Mexican-American and Mexican community. The Latinx Arts Project/Artes de Proyecto Latinx - Carpinteria is fundraising to create three murals that address the Past/Present and Future of our community. We have big dreams!

1. Oral histories from the handful of former Aliso School students, including one 101-year-old woman!
2. Call for three designs to be announced soon. Two of three locations have been identified to date.
3. Murals will then be installed and celebrated. We hope to have paint materials donated and have volunteer community members and artists from throughout Santa Barbara County join in.
4. Ongoing social media and press on the Latinix Mural Project.
5. Visual projections of all designs submitted to be shown on a public wall for the entire community to see and celebrate before announcing the three recipients whose designs will grace the walls.
6. We will create an educational aspect to share the history in our schools.

Carpinteria is almost 50% Latino; 80% in the schools. Currently, there are no murals (in a town with four murals) that celebrate past and present Latin culture.

We hope to create a mural map to ALL murals in Carpinteria.

Our goal is to engage all community members, local students, artists, etc., to be a part of this project!
