This is my dad, Lance Hunger. He is a kind, patient, goofy guy with a love of dad jokes. He has been the rock of his family and is the hardest working man you'll ever meet in this life. He has worked sometimes multiple jobs at once for decades, on his feet and throwing boxes in warehouses through chronic pain and illness and at times literally going in and out of the hospital for weeks at a time. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 23 years ago and through it all, he has never complained that the work was too much, never used his illnesses or pain as an excuse to be anything less than the greatest, kindest, most patient man you can ever hope to meet.
This Father's Day, he had a massive heart attack and was life-flighted to the hospital. Along with a heart attack, he had complications of pneumonia, kidney disease, and vascular disease that continued to increase while he was there. Doctors also said they believe he’s been in heart failure for probably 10 years. He spent almost 3 weeks in the hospital becoming stable enough for quadruple bypass surgery, which finally happened in the beginning of July. He has now been in the hospital almost every day since with a couple days home before he gets worse. He has not been able to keep any food or water down and hasn’t had any nourishment since the original heart attack. They have put in feeding tubes, which he has not been able to keep in as he’s been throwing up so hard and they finally did a surgery placing a tube directly into his stomach
He has, obviously, not been able to work since this all started and the pitiful disability pay he has been receiving from his work has not come even close to covering the basic living expenses and plethora of medical bills he and my mom have had to pay. He has at least three more months of recovery before he will even be able to think about returning to work, and that is if he even is able to at all. While he’s been in the hospital and also in ICU after the surgery, my mom has needed to remain by his side and be his advocate in the hospital as he struggles with communication, as he has sensory processing disorder, with communication especially bad when he is sick. My mom will be looking for a job as soon as he stabilizes. But meanwhile…
I'm not usually one to ask for things like this, but this man is my hero and he needs help. If anyone at all can help, so they don't lose their home and so they can pay the plethora of medical bills that will come their way, so they can make it through this, it would mean the world to not only him and my mom, but also myself, his other 5 children, and his 3 grandchildren.
