The Lakeland Elementary Middle School library has been in great need of a facelift as it was last updated almost 20 years ago. This is a highly used space both as a resource classroom, by core-classroom teachers for instructional purposes and by teachers and administrators alike for large and small group meeting space both during and after school. As our school has grown from 400 students in 2010 to over 950 students in 2019 we are finding ourselves looking at each space in the building and trying to ensure it is used to it maximum capacity. Our library is a large space and with the ability to simultaneously meet many needs. With the help of a renovation this seemed to be an important area to focus on in our continued growth.
The changes we are making to the space include creating designated younger and older children learning spaces, adding in a meeting room, a reading nook, 3 small group booth seating workspaces, an iPad table, desktops available to students for extended hours, reference iPad for finding materials in the space, reviewing and updating our collection to include socially and culturally responsive materials at all ages, updating integrated presentation technology, new floors throughout, new chairs and tables, mobile bookshelves, fresh paint, mural and wall art.
--------
Since the Baltimore Running Festival 2018 fundraiser, we have completed:
- New flooring from the dingy stained carpet to bright tiles
- New Tables that a volunteer group assembled and chairs
- Booth seating workspaces,
- Fresh, bright paint on the walls
- Installation of cubby risers and a volunteer group to paint thematic colors throughout
- Reconstruction and Reconfiguration of bookshelves with back boards painted and shelving cleaned of sticky residue
Last year with the Baltimore Running Festival Fundraiser specifically, with your support, we raised $1400 which went to building the cubby risers in the library. This has been an amazing support for classes that have begun to take place in the library!
This year for the Baltimore Running Festival funds will be used for:
- Technology additions
- Books Books & More Books!
- Additional furniture (ie- reading nook, podium, puppet theatre)
