Wirrarika Water Access and Sustainability Project
Donation protected
The Wixarika is a people that hold a profound spiritual tradition that has touched the heart of many communities around the world, with the deep wisdom and healing that they carry. Sadly, many indigenous communities are suffering the impact of the western world and have challenges to access basic needs such as clean water, and infrastructures such for hygiene and education. This project aims to support the La Laguna community in the Sierra to access some of these needs.
Supporting the Wixarika Community of La Laguna:
In the heart of La Laguna, the Wixarika community relies on a
natural water spring that provides clear, potable water year-round.
While the spring remains a reliable source during the dry season
and flourishes in the rainy season, the community currently lacks
adequate infrastructure to bring this vital resource to the main communal areas.
The Project Goals
We aim to transform water access and sustainability for 7 families,
comprising 31 adults and 25 children, while fostering long-term self-
reliance and environmental stewardship.
The key objectives include:
- Ensuring 24/7 access to potable water for drinking, household use, and gardening.
- Planting 20–30 fruit trees around the communal area, homes, and the school to promote food security and ecological health.
- Constructing a communal greenhouse to support year-round food cultivation.
- Building 3 communal cabins (cabañas) to provide rest and shelter for visitors, family members, and as gathering spaces during community festivities.
- Installing 2 dry toilets and designated shower areas to improve
hygiene and sanitation.
To achieve these goals, we need:
- A water pump engine to draw water from the spring.
- 3 water containers with a capacity of 20,000 liters each.
- Materials for an aluminum greenhouse.
- Construction materials for cabins, toilets, showers, and protective structures for the water system.
- Supplies for gardening, including tools, plants, and fencing.
- Labor and transportation costs to bring all materials from
neighbouring villages and cities.
Estimated Budget
The total estimated cost for this transformative
project is £45,000.
