LVLA's 2016 East Coast College Trip

Fundraiser Goal

The LVLA East Coast College tour will allow a group of 12 of our students to travel to the East Coast and visit various four year universities including Georgetown, Columbia, NYU, UPenn, Brown, and Smith College. At each school, students will participate in a tour as well as listen to panels led by first generation college students and professors. Through these activities, students will have the opportunity to meet students, ask questions, and most importantly begin to envision themselves at these colleges and be motivated to continue to achieve academic excellence in order to reach their college-going dreams. This will also be a chance for our students to step out of their comfort zone and experience different surroundings. For many students this includes leaving California for the first time in their young lives. This is an opportunity that will help shape the college-going future of our Lions and it would not be possible without your support.

About Luis Valdez Leadership Academy

Luis Valdez Leadership Academy (LVLA) is a charter high school in east side San Jose located in the Yerba Buena community. Under the management of the Foundation for Hispanic Education, LVLA opened its doors to its founding class of freshmen in the 2014-2015 academic year. LVLA now serves nearly 200 students in the 9th and 10th grade.

Mission and Vision

LVLA is committed to providing a rigorous academic program designed to instill a lifelong passion for learning and to equip students with the skills for social and academic success at four year colleges, universities and local community colleges. Through an emphasis on visual and performing arts, a digital media curriculum and a culturally sustaining pedagogy, LVLA will graduate empowered young adults who are poised, confident, and articulate leaders. Through a focus on the Spanish language, for both native speakers and learners, LVLA students will use their education, bi-literacy and life experiences to create positive change in their own lives, their families and within their communities. Through leadership, excellence, responsibility and resilience, our graduates will make a positive impact on the East San Jose community and beyond.

Creating and Sustaining a College-Going Culture

LVLA is devoted to creating an environment where college is not only a possibility but the goal for all students. Many LVLA families are immigrants to the US and/or live far below the poverty line. Prior to coming to LVLA, their exposure to a college environment was limited. In order to create and promote a College-Going Culture, exposure to all aspects of the college application and enrollment process are essential.

To date, in LVLA's year and a half of operation, our school has taken over 140 students on seven college trips all over California and to the east coast. The list includes schools like Loyola Marymount, Whittier College, St. Mary's College, UC Riverside, UCLA, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, Sacramento State, Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal Poly, Cal State Los Angeles, Brown, UPenn, Fordham, Smith, NYU, Columbia, and Georgetown. All students were able to attend these life changing trips at little to no cost to their families.

Nearly all of the students attending the trip would be the first in their families to attend college. Without a role model in their immediate families to guide them on their path to a four-year university, trips like these are one of the few avenues that LVLA students have at a firsthand look of a college environment.

Any and all contributions can and will benefit LVLA in promoting its College-Going Culture. Your donations will support things like lodging, transportation, and meals on this trip.

Thank you so much for your on-going support!
