On a Journey to Make a Difference

Donation protected
I am on a journey.

I am on a journey to fulfill my dreams of making a difference within the global health system.  My strong desire to aid in whatever way possible to eliminate health disparities did not develop overnight, rather it solidified itself over the entire course of my life. How? Well there is no simple answer to that question, but I will try my best.

Whenever I tell my friends, family, or those in my social network that I want to become a doctor, I am faced with the same question over and over again: Well, what kind of doctor? My answer to them is: At this point in my educational career I don't yet know which specialty I want to pursue, but what I do know is that my ultimate dream is to open up medical clinics in Central America.

I am then faced with a follow up question by those who don't know me well: Well, why Central America?  The answer to this is very easy.

In December 2013, I volunteered with the Global Brigades and completed the Water and Medical Brigades in Honduras.  This was the first time I witnessed extreme poverty.  I was informed that the residents of Honduras do not have the means of receiving medical care, as it is very expensive and lacking quality, and that the only time that residents are able to see a doctor is when brigades come to town.  After learning this, and after hearing that the majority of the residents who we saw on the Medical Brigade traveled for 4+ hours by foot, and what I mean by foot, I mean by bare foot...no socks, no shoes...nothing but their bare feet, I knew I had to do something.  While it has always been my dream to become a doctor, this experience in Honduras has helped steer my passion in a more focused direction to do whatever in my power to open medical clinics once I receive my credentials.

So where exactly am I in my journey? I am a recent graduate who is currently receiving training to obtain an EMT certification.  With this certification I will volunteer with an organization called Global Crossroad in their Healthcare and Medical Project in Peru.  This opportunity will allow me to work in hospitals, clinics, and specialized projects to provide healthcare to disadvantaged Peruvians.  However, before I do this, I must take the MCAT. In order to be the best medical school applicant that I can be, I must prepare for this 7.5 hour exam.

This is where I am hoping to receive YOUR help.
In order to prepare for this daunting exam, I need to take the Kaplan prep course. This 3 month long prep course will provide me with the necessary tools and strategies to perform well on the MCAT...the exam that ultimately determines my fate into medical school.

With the proper preparation for the MCAT along with my volunteer experiences, I am certain that I will be a strong candidate for medical school.  Receiving help to fund this prep course will bring me that much closer to fulfilling my ultimate dream of opening up medical clinics in Central America.

I now ask you for your help in making my journey to make a difference come true.  Thank you!
