Hi everyone! My name is Kayla Martin, and I am a Junior at the University of Alabama. I am an employee at the Office of Veteran and Military Affairs here at the University, and would like to create a scholarship in remembrance of my father, LTC Thomas Michael Hawes.
In the eyes of the VA, and the military, I am what is called a "Survivor". This means, I lost my parent while they were active duty status in the military. My Dad was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, serving his 24th year.
I am creating this scholarship in hopes in furthering educational benefits for Survivors here at the University of Alabama. Currently, there are 10 of us (myself included) enrolled full time at the university. This scholarship, named after my Dad, will be awarded to a random Survivor here at the University at the end of this semester. This money could significantly help with books, exam fees, tuition, housing, or even be saved towards pursuing their masters degree. Hopefully if it is successful, this is something I can continuously offer to Survivors for years to come at the University of Alabama.
If it weren't for my father and his service, I would not have access to the education I am receiving, wouldn't be employed here at the Office of Veteran and Military Affairs, or pursuing my degree in Collaborative Education. This scholarship will be my thank you to him and the opportunities he has granted me, and the ability to let other Survivors know they are not alone.
I encourage my friends and family (and whoever else is inclined!) to please donate towards this scholarship and make it a reality. There is a student here who is well deserving, and it could create a positive impact in their academic career. Even if it is only $1-$5, every penny will help in making this dream of mine a reality!
When the scholarship is rewarded, I would like to recognize the "winner", and present their photo on my facebook page, if necessary, I can provide a formal email from my office on the existence of this scholarship.
