Home. It’s only 41 miles away.
It was October 15, 1979, a field of 17 women crews were set to embark on their journey home in the inaugural Na wahine O ke Kai race. In this instance, home is Oahu. Between where they stood at Hale o Lono harbor and home, was the Ka`iwi channel. 41 miles of canoe paddling across the channel of bones.
This year will mark the 40th anniversary of that first woman’s crossing. Thanks to those very women, we also have the chance to make history in becoming the first junior women crew from our community to cross the Ka`iwi channel.
To do it, we need your help!!
Our goal is to race in the junior women division of the Na Wahine O Ke Kai race from Molokai to Oahu. To reach our goal, we need your assistance in helping to defer some of the cost in order to get to the starting line. Your assistance will help us with:
1. Entry fee
2. Escort boat w/Captain
3. One way airfare to Molokai
4. Shipping fee for our canoe to get to Molokai
5. Race uniforms
By reaching our goal, we will be able to focus on preparing for our journey. This will allow us to put our maximum efforts into our training both mentally and physically without the financial stress of participating in this historic event.
We truly appreciate your support and hope that you will continue to follow us through our journey as we will provide updates along with the many thank you we hope to send to each of our supporters.
To all of our families, friends, and coaches, thank you for committing to this journey with us. Your love and support will get us across the Kaiwi. Mahalo!
