As we enter the 2020-2021 school year we face a number of challenges – from creating safe and dynamic policy debate programs in the virtual space, to supporting students as they face deep-seated systemic and institutional racism in our society. Addressing this problem requires a multifaceted approach, including a focus on high school students who can be agents of change. Policy debate is a proven method for advancing our goals to support youth of color in acquiring the tools necessary to pursue higher education and career paths that they are traditionally denied. Empowering young people of color to achieve such success is a critical step in promoting economic mobility, as well as political and social status.
The upcoming school year provides a powerful opportunity to bring together the benefits of debate with the urgent and relevant topic:
RESOLVED: The United States federal government should enact substantial criminal justice reform in the United States in one or more of the following: forensic science, policing, sentencing.
This topic will engage students in the policy issues that lie at the center of our broader public debate about racial justice; and our work at LAMDL seeks to broaden the scope of programming to advance our program opportunities not only in our debate league, but also in public forums.
This year, we have created some exclusive merchandise, created to raise funds to support debate programs in the 30+ LAUSD schools that we serve. As school budgets and resources have been adversely affected due to the global pandemic, we need your support now more than to support these necessary and important programs.
Your tax-deductible contribution to these timely and necessary programs serves thousands of students across Los Angeles County and leverages this year’s policy resolution to increase our impact in the communities that we serve. Not only is our program providing the most academically rigorous extracurricular activity that our schools have to offer, but we are equipping our students with the skills and opportunities that will have a lifelong impact.
