Kylie's Alopecia Camp Fundraising
Donation protected
Kylie is a vibrant, energetic seven year old little girl who could sing and listen to Taylor Swift 24/7! I would say that is totally normal for her age. She has a heart of gold and treasures her close friendships and truly loves life and all it has to offer. Sadly she has recently had to endure a life battle some some folks may never have to face. She was diagnosed with Alopecia Areta initially but we soon learned it was Alopecia Universalis, which effects the head, eyebrows, eyelashes, facial and body hair. Her immune system was attacking itself killing all her hair follicles.
This harsh reality came true starting while Kylie was out of school for winter break 2014. Each day she woke with less and less hair and by the time she had to go back to school she was completely bald. Devastation doesn’t even begin to express the feelings this little girl went through every time she looked in a mirror or woke up to a pile of hair in her bed. How was she to face friends at school, at gymnastics, at girl scouts? How was she to face anyone anywhere? Everyone would laugh or tease her… And some did. Kylie did return to school. Some days were ok but some were terrible and Kylie would get off the bus in tears telling her parents the teasing she faced that day on the playground. Janet along with Kylie’s family and friends encouraged her to see the beauty within herself and to be brave. And with each day that passed she became braver and braver. She returned to girl scouts and gymnastics with the support of her best friend Molly and school was easier with her best buddy Shawn by her side. As Kylie has said many many times she couldn't of done it with the support and love of her family and friends for whom she is forever thankful. She is facing her new normal with an unbelievable amount of strength and bravery. Although she still faces many sad days she truly is a model of when life throws you a curveball you need to pick yourself up and keep moving forward.
Her bravery is admirable, her story is heartwarming, and she is a role model to others who face adversity in their life. This August Kylie has the opportunity to attend a camp in North Carolina for children with Alopecia. This is an opportunity for Kylie to be around other girls and boys who are just like her. The excitement of meeting kids just like her makes her smile beam brighter then it normally does and has helped offer encouragement to get through the tough days. This camp experience will help Kylie continue on her path of bravery and will build her support network beyond her current family and friends but to other girls and boys who truly know and understand the world she lives in because they live in it too.
Kylie and her family are asking for help to make this camp a possibility for her. Their goal is to raise $5000 to pay for the camp and travel expenses of this year’s camp and to start a fund that they can continue to build on for next year.
Kylie and her mother Janet have been making Shamballa and glass bead bracelets as a fundraising effort as well on Etsy: Ky Chi Bracelets
