Help Kristen Beat Cancer!

Donation protected
Well, cancer is awful. This we all know. But every story is unique. This is Kristen’s Story.

About Kristen:

My beautiful sister, loving mother of four, wonderful wife, and caring daughter is a rock for just about every person she meets. She has a compassionate magnetism completely unique to her. Random strangers in stores will delve into their intimate struggles and seem to walk away lighter just because she listened for a moment.

Kristen has an uncanny ability to make anyone feel like they’re the most incredible person on this earth with nothing more than a brief conversation. Each one of her four children undoubtedly know THEY, alone, are the favorite. I undoubtedly know I’m her favorite sibling of the five of us.

She dedicates her entire life to the ones she loves. She brings light and a creative outlook to every obstacle she comes across, and she takes on other people’s obstacles with the same vigor as her own.

For once, Kristen is the one who needs some compassionate hearts and a few rocks to crash against. I know this makes her squirm with discomfort, because she never wants to be the one who needs help. As her little sister, I think it’s good for her to deal with the changing tide for a minute, and I know so many people are excited to give back to someone who’s given so much.

Despite Kristen's strength, she'll need your love, friendship, and support to kick cancer to the curb. Anyone that knows Kristen knows she is optimistic, creative, strong, and funny - a perfect mix of character to help her get through what will undoubtedly be a tough and hard-fought journey.

In the meantime, she continues to do all that’s entailed with being a mother of four. With children ranging from ages 3 to 15 she’s managed to stay involved in every aspect of their busy lives. She uses every spare moment (often those sleepless nights) reading, researching, planning, praying, and seeking any and every option to beat this.

Here's what we know.

For a few months Kristen had been feeling fatigued and slightly out of balance, but as a mother of four, of course she brushed it off and continued to go about her busy life. Then she found a lump.

A physical lead to a mammogram. A mammogram lead to a biopsy. A biopsy to a painful waiting period which lead the diagnosis.

Ever since it’s been a whirlwind of constant appointments, phone calls, tests, with a fire-hose of information without time to even process the painful words, “I have cancer”.

Febuary 14th, two days after her 42nd birthday, Kristen underwent her first surgery. A single mastectomy to the left breast and two lymph nodes removed.

The first surgery wasn't perfect, so she underwent an imediate second surgery the following day to clear things up. The doctor said it went well and they felt they did what needed to be done for now. Then preliminary tests on the lymph nodes came back negative for more signs of cancer. We celebrate every vitory we can.

A prescription for a wig. Hair lost shorty after her son's 16th birthday.

For now, rest and healing.

How you can help.

Please consider helping Kristen in any way you can. She's a lucky woman to have so many friends and family that truly care about her. Sending your much-appreciated thoughts, funny jokes, prayers and good vibes is a great place to start.

If you can give more than healing light, then please consider donating money to help cover medical expenses to ensure Kristen receives the best care available. We’ve also set up an amazon registry (link at bottom of page) of helpful items for their home if you’re more comfortable with that option, and you’re also welcome to VENMO Kristen or Rick directly if you’d prefer, which is a simple and free app on your phone that will allow them to access the funds immediately and without any fees. Feel free to contact me with any questions about these and other options. (contact me through this site or facebook with your contact info)

Luckily Kristen does have insurance, but her deductible is outrageous and does not cover the cost of specialized testing and treatments. Her medical expenses have already begun to pile up and we know this is the beginning of her journey.

Financial support will help pay Kristen's deductible expenses, uncovered procedures, tests, medications and basic living expenses as she will need to take time to heal.

What's next?

Stay in the Loop: We’ll continue to update a CaringBridge site to communicate the latest on Kristen's diagnosis and treatment.

Have no doubt that Kristen is preparing to meet this challenge as she's met every other challenge in life: headfirst and wielding her greatest superpower - laughter!

My sister and I have been able to share many laughs and we continue to have a determination to find hillarious and sometimes inappropriate jokes about the whole process. Feel free to join our scavenger hunt for seriously funny things in this serious time.
(A few of my favorite exchanges with Kristen so far:
-joking that she’s becoming a Picasso painting.
- me sending her a Valentine’s Day farewell love poem to her left boob. )

We’ll update as things move along- including joke highlights.

Thank you a million times over for giving my sister and her family support and funds to pay for new treatments, doctors, drugs, therapies, food, transportation and all it’s taking to help battle cancer.

We will beat this.
