Let me tell you about the most amazing woman I know...
Her name is Krystal Hanegan, but most of us who love her dearly know her as Kris. She is a wife, mother, minister, activist, and is about to embark on the most amazing part of her journey into changing the world yet, graduate school.
But you need to understand something about Kris. She doesn't think small, she doesn't want to just make ripples, she is not content to sit by and hope that things get better. She goes big, aims for the stars, and does what it takes to be the change she wants to see in the world.
This is why Kris was accepted to not one but two of the most prestigious and innovative seminaries in the country to begin her dual master's degree (like I said, she goes hard!). Kris had her choices between Boston University and Union Theological Seminary. After much prayer and discernment she chose Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University for her MDiv/MSW (Masters of Divinty and Masters of Social Work).
Kris hopes to someday work for the United Nations on issues pertaining to the international rights of children. Her graduate work situates her in the center of the intersection between religion, politics, and social change. Both of her degrees will provide her with unparalleled training and access to some of the greatest minds and bravest voices in the fields of religion and social work.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our family, and more importantly it is the season in which Kris is able to pursue her calling in a way that she has not yet been able to do. It is an exciting and nerve-wracking time for our family. But being on the precipice of life-changing events is enough to give anyone butterflies.
But as you can imagine, a move across the country for a family of five is no small feat. It has taken months of planning, preparation, and a healthy dose of embracing the unknown.
And that is why we have created this GoFundMe campaign. Despite our best efforts and most sincere planning we have run into some financial hurdles that we didn't anticipate and couldn't avoid. And now we have reached a place where we are reaching out to you, our community of friends, family, and people who know and who see the possibilities that Kris can bring to a world that is broken and wounded in so many ways.
The money that we are raising here is primarily oriented towards three hurdles to our ability to fully live-in to the next chapter of our lives: Insurance and Health Care, Moving, and School Expenses.
Insurance and Health Care consists of the necessary health examination and insurance down payments to fulfill the requirements for registration at Union. For the last two years Kris and I have been without health insurance and need to pay for these exams and downpayments out of pocket.
Moving expenses consist of packing up and driving our entire life some 1,400 miles across the country, picking up those essentials that didn't make the move (toilet paper anyone?), and updating some much needed sleeping arrangements for our kiddos.
School expenses consists of finishing off the last of Kris's UCO debt and covering the initial startup costs at Union (e.g., books, fees, deposits, etc.)
All in all we are hoping that you our community can help us fill in the gaps due to some unforseen challenges. If you know anything about my best friend she is utterly mortified that I ever posted this in the first place. But if you know anything about Kris you also realize that she has a unique and special calling and that this is the next step in living into that.
And I can only speak for myself, but I can't wait to see what God has in store for her and for our family in this next chapter.
