Since 2019, Saddharaja and the Kolkata Project team have developed basic Buddhist activities in new places in India.

Triratna is very developed across large areas of India, especially Maharashtra. But India is a huge country, and there are many people in other regions who would like to learn about the Dharma and be guided in meditation.

The Kolkata team works, in person and online, in many parts of India developing completely new Triratna groups and supporting developing centres.

The work involves introducing the key Buddhist practices of meditation and ethical practice, as well as Dharma study (including translating texts into local languages), devotional practices, festival days, retreats and building sangha.

The team works with the most disadvantaged sections of society, including some tribal communities. Current areas include:

West Bengal: Kolkata (Palta), Kalyani, Bagula and Bhayana.

Madya Pradesh: Bhopal.

Rajasthan: Alwar and Sanchi district.

Maharashtra: Sangili and Warud

Kerala: Kochi

The team consists of two supported full-time workers. These are the husband-and-wife team Nagamitra and Nityasri. Based in Nagpur, they travel widely to carry out their work. As well as running the Kolkata Project, they also contribute to two developing Triratna centres: Warud in Maharashtra and Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. In all this, they are joined by Adityabodhi - who is based in Pune, together with Saddharaja and Maitridasa, who are based in the UK. The team is shown in the top right picture above.

Most of the funds for these projects have been raised by Saddharaja. Since the Covid lockdowns, he has completed 5 big cycling fundraisers (he's 66 and suffers from rheumatoid arthritis). In 2023 he completed the route from Land's End to John O'Groats (1100 miles) over three rides. In the summer of 2024 he cycled across parts of Utah, Idaho and Montana in the USA. In 2025, he completed a tour of East Anglia, again in the UK. Thank you all those donors out there!

We would now like to raise our target to £30k and then close fundraising. This will give us enough to spread Triratna’s activities into the regions mentioned above .
