5/18 update from Matt and Jessica:
What a journey this has already been, friends. The emotional roller coaster that our family has been on over these last two weeks is unbelievable. But today I have some good news to share! While in hospice care, Matt showed so much improvement from where he was a week ago, so much so that he began to look into what options may still be out there for him. After consulting with both hospice and Emory doctors who also saw how much he’d improved, he was encouraged to leave hospice and return to Winship. He has started chemo and is ready to fight The mental and physical strength he’s shown throughout ALL of the ups and downs of this disease has been incredible and we are so grateful to have a chance to give this thing some hell. Today was a good day
5/10 update: Friends and Family, on behalf of Matt and Jessica and the Van Dusen family, we are sharing that Matt has made the extremely difficult decision to forgo chemo treatment at this time after the unsuccessful surgery. Matt is taking each day as it comes while his family spends as much time as possible with him. If you would like to visit, please reach out to Jessica for coordinating.
We are raising funds to support Matt Van Dusen, his wife, Jessica, and daughter Amelia (1 year old) while he battles leiomyosarcoma cancer. This is a rare type of cancer that grows in the smooth muscles. Matt is a loved math teacher at Westlake High School where he coaches Football, Baseball and E-sports. He has dedicated his life to teaching and coaching and his students, athletes, co-workers and admin all speak so highly of him. As a teacher, sick days are limited, as is teacher salary, as we all know. Help us relieve the burden, while this sweet family goes through this most difficult time. In true math teacher form: #KickinAngleSideSide
