Transitional Health Support for Khenpo Lophel

Dear sangha and friends,

As some of you have heard, our dear Khenpo Lophel has been affected by a serious health problem recently. Fortunately, he has been receiving excellent medical attention in Calgary, Canada. A small team of our sangha has stepped up to ensure that all of the logistics of his care are managed.

Khenpo has a heart and kidney issue that worsened to the point of bringing him to the ICU at the end of November. On December 9, Khenpo was discharged from the ICU but will need to continue to stay in the hospital for several more days as he gains his strength and as the doctors run some final tests. His doctors have confirmed that Khenpo will require at least four to eight weeks of dialysis, and they have insisted that he should stay in Calgary for this period of time.

Luckily, Khenpo has not and might not incur any medical expenses. However, there is an additional level of care that will be necessary for Khenpo during the 4 to 8 week period. We have arranged to have at least one sangha member caring for Khenpo in Calgary, full time, every day. This care has included and will include preparing the appropriate healthy meals, liaising with the range of medical staff, and transporting Khenpo to and from the hospital three times per week for his dialysis appointments.

In order to make this care possible, we will need to raise funds to cover the cost of:

     (1) flights to and from Calgary for the caregivers who will be alternating every few weeks
     (2) a temporary apartment near the hospital for Khenpo and the care-giver
     (3) the cost of healthy food for Khenpo’s special diet and the cost of other incidentals
     (4) car rental and other transportation costs within Calgary

Our goal is to raise at least 5000 CAD for this time period. This is the best estimate that we can make at this time. More or less might be needed, but it is too early to know. Any additional funds will be dedicated to Khenpo’s flight and transition to the Toronto Riwoche Tibetan Buddhist Temple. It is likely that he will need longer term support, and the temple has welcomed him.

Up until this point, four caregivers have been supported thanks to the generosity of Kyabgön Phakchok Rinpoche, Khenpo Sonam Rinpoche and several members of the Mangala Shri sangha in Vancouver. Please join them in offering continuing support for Khenpo Lophel. Any amount of contribution is appreciated.

Khenpo Lophel is a fully ordained monk who has dedicated to his life to helping others. He completed philosophical training (equivalent to a Buddhist PhD) at the Dzongsar Shedra in Bir, India. For the past 10 years, he has devotedly worked to guide others on the Buddhist path and preserve the Taklung Kagyu tradition. At this critical time for Khenpo Lophel, we ask that you do not contact him directly so that he is not overwhelmed with calls and so forth.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Students from the Taklung Kagyu sanghas in Toronto and Vancouver
