Our brave Tiny Unicorn Kerrie was diagnosed with SMAS in May 2019 after a 10+ year brutal battle with stomach problems. After months of procedures and surgeries, 2 feeding tubes and a port, dozens of specialists who all said they had no idea what SMAS was and couldn’t help, she was placed on Hospice given weeks to live on Thanksgiving 2019. Doctors told her she was going through similar to Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer hell. A dear friend and Warrior found an article a brilliant surgeon in Ocala wrote about SMAS and his idea to cure this terrible disease. Kerrie called Dr Ang and was scheduled for a surgical consult but came down with COVID weeks later. After a 3+ month long excruciating battle, Kerrie beat Covid and called Dr Ang. On August 10, 2020 Kerrie chose to be Patient #1for that ground breaking clinical trial surgery that would save her life and become the cure for the very rare Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome. Every minute of every day was a living hell for Kerrie and her Husband Shawn leading up to that surgery. They lived in survival mode for over 14 years until she received the gift of a brilliant surgeon’s knowledge of SMAS, talents and compassion like they’ve never seen before. He gave them HOPE for the first time in 11+ years! The surgery was successful with some issues on scar tissue from a previous botched surgery that resulted in a full bowel resection. She ate her first bites of solid food in years just 7 days post op and cried over the delicious hospital meal with the video going viral. Kerrie started eating and gaining weight like a champ, enjoying life like never before and appreciating everything in a different light. Kerrie and Shawn opened their dream business and began caring for the Island’s precious pets. She began to sing her heart out again with a talented professional musician Gio and began singing in beautiful establishments and venues with plans to submit an album to the Grammys. All her dreams were coming true when out of nowhere she started feeling terrible pains again after eating in September and was sent to the ER. Once again in and out of hospitals non stop since then, she finally made it to Ocala and got the best treatment and answers she needed to get a surgery scheduled with Dr Ang February 19th. She urgently needs a full laparotomy for him to do Lysis of Adhesions, Hernia Repair, Bowel Resection and Scar Tissue Removal. The pain and suffering she’s been going through is indescribable. She’s been unable to care for her furry friends, sing with Gio or help her farmers market friends and has been struggling for months with medical bills and costs of supplies and necessities piling up. Shawn has been going back and forth to the hospital and staying in hotels to be close so she could see him and their fur babies. The surgery is going to be very long, difficult and rough on her tiny fragile body and it’s an even more difficult longer recovery. Shawn and Kerrie have been battling this health nightmare now for 16 years. They have another tough road ahead as she slays this recovery and will eat again and live and love life and food again.
