Keep Simon at AFI – Hilf mein Filmstudium in LA zu beenden

Meine Geschichte: *English version below

Hi, ich bin Simon und ich bitte um deine Hilfe mein letztes Studienjahr an einer der renommiertesten Filmschulen der Welt in Los Angeles möglich zu machen.

Nach meinem Abschluss an der IFS internationalen Filmschule Köln hatte ich letztes Jahr das große Privileg am AFI American Film Institute als einziger deutscher Regisseur in den letzten fünf Jahren angenommen worden zu sein. Nach einer längeren Vorbereitungsphase zog ich im Juli letzten Jahres in die USA und habe das für mich aufregendste und lehrreichste erste Studienjahr erleben dürfen.

Das AFI im Herzen von Hollywood gilt als eine der einflussreichsten Talentschmieden der US-amerikanischen Filmindustrie. Hier sind Filmemacher zur Schule gegangen wie David Lynch (TWIN PEAKS, MULHOLLAND DRIVE, ERASERHEAD), Terence Malik (TREE OF LIFE), Darren Aronofsky (BLACK SWAN, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, MOTHER) oder Patty Jenkins (WONDER WOMAN, MONSTER).

Ich habe das AFI als einen außergewöhnlichen Ort für mich als Filmemacher im letzten Jahr erlebt. Noch nie konnte ich in so kurzer Zeit so viel Erfahrung und Wissen als Regisseur und Autor sammeln. Die Hochschule verfolgt einen sehr praktischen und produktionsbezogenen Ansatz, den ich so an keiner anderen deutschen Filmschule kennen gelernt habe.

Ich habe das Glück mit 26 Regiestudierenden und ca. 125 weiteren, talentierten Filmemachern aus den anderen Disziplinen wie Drehbuch, Produktion, Kamera, Schnitt und Szenenbild zusammen studieren und arbeiten zu dürfen. Dabei sind fast die Hälfte so wie ich internationale Studierende und kommen aus jeglichen Kulturkreis der Welt, was für mich eine der wertvollsten und inspirierenden Erfahrungen am AFI ist.

Im ersten Studienjahr habe ich bereits in unterschiedlichen Teams drei Kurzfilme mit einer Länge zwischen 10 - 12 Minuten gedreht. Diese so genannten „Cycle Films“ werden am AFI von der Idee bis zur finalen Präsentation innerhalb von zwei Monaten produziert was für mich eine äußerlich anspruchsvolle und harte Schule war.

Ich habe mich in meinen Filmen mit einer Komödie, einem Drama und einem Horrorfilm drei unterschiedlichen Genres und Erzählweisen gewidmet.

Jetzt steht mein zweites und letztes Studienjahr an. In dem wird es hauptsächlich darum gehen meinen Abschlussfilm zu drehen. Ich hatte das Glück das mein Drehbuch unter mehr als 100 Einsendungen von dem AFI Abschlussfilm-Komitee als eins von 27 Abschlussfilm-Drehbüchern ausgewählt wurde.

Neben meinem Abschlussfilm werde ich im zweiten Studienjahr die Möglichkeit haben mehr Seminare zu besuchen, weitere Übungsfilme zu drehen und mein erstes Langfilm-Drehbuch zu entwickeln.

Im zweite Jahr wird es dabei vor allem darum gehen mit der Branche vor Ort vernetzt zu werden. Zum Beispiel habe ich das Privileg im kommenden Semester für den ehemaligen AFI Absolvent Ari Aster (MIDSOMMAR, HEREDITARY, BEAU IS AFRAID) als Pradikant arbeiten zu dürfen.

Doch so ein Master-Studium an einer amerikanischen Hochschule wie dem AFI ist mit ziemlich hohen Kosten verbunden.

Für mich waren diese Summen unerreichbar, doch nach meiner Einladung ans AFI habe ich in einer langen Finanzierungsphase Anfang 2023 es geschafft die Summe vor Studienbeginn zusammenzubringen. Einen großen Teil dieser Finanzierung verdanke ich meinen Eltern sowie dem DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, der Norbert Janssen Stiftung und dem AFI selbst die mich durch ein Stipendium unterstützen.

Außerdem wurde ich von einer Fotokünstlerin aus Deutschland unterstützt, die jedoch leider im Frühsommer unter tragischen Umständen verstorben ist. Aus diesem Grund fehlt mir ein entscheidender Teil dieser Finanzierung, sodass ich mich jetzt unvermittelt in einer finanziell schwierigen Situation befinde.

Auch wenn es um sehr hohe Summen geht, ist die gute Neuigkeit jedoch:

Für den letzten noch verbleibenden Teil der in die Studienkosten meines letzten Semesters ausmacht, bitte ich um deine Hilfe. Jeder Betrag hilft mir länger in LA und am AFI zu bleiben und kommt direkt bei mir an. Du kannst mir also helfen all die tollen Dinge, die im kommende Jahr für mich hier anstehen möglich zu machen.

I'm Simon, I'm a filmmaker from Germany and I'm asking for your help to make my final year of studies at one of the most renowned film schools in the world in Los Angeles possible.

After graduating from the IFS international film school in Cologne, I had the great privilege of being accepted last year at the AFI American Film Institute as the only German director in the previous five years. After a long preparation phase, I moved to the USA in July 2023 and was able to experience the most exciting and educational first year of study.

AFI, located in the Hollywood Hills, is considered one of the most influential talent factories in the US film industry. Filmmakers such as David Lynch (TWIN PEAKS, MULHOLLAND DRIVE, ERASERHEAD), Terence Malik (TREE OF LIFE), Darren Aronofsky (BLACK SWAN, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, MOTHER), and Patty Jenkins (WONDER WOMAN, MONSTER) went to school here.

For me, AFI has been an extraordinary place over the past year. I have never been able to gain such a wide range of experience and knowledge as a director and writer in this short amount of time. The university takes a very practical and production-oriented approach that I have not encountered at any German film school.

I'm lucky to be able to study and work together with 26 directing students and about 125 other talented filmmakers from the other disciplines such as screenwriting, production, cinematography, editing and production design. Almost half of them, just like me, are international students and come from all over the world, which is one of the most valuable and inspiring experiences at AFI for me.

In my first year, I shot three short films with a length between 10 - 12 minutes in different teams. These so-called “Cycle Films” are produced from the idea to the final presentation within two months, which was an exceptionally challenge for me.

I have dedicated myself to three different genres and narrative styles in these films: a comedy, a drama, and a horror film.

Now I am in the beginning of my second and final year of studies. This year will mainly be about shooting my thesis film. I was lucky that my script was selected as one of 27 thesis scripts by the AFI thesis committee from more than 100 submissions.

In addition to my thesis film production, I will have the opportunity in my second year to attend more seminars, shoot more exercises, and develop my first feature-length script.

The main focus in the last year will be more on getting connected with the industry. For example, I have the privilege in the upcoming semester to work as an intern for former AFI graduate Ari Aster (MIDSOMMAR, HEREDITARY, BEAU IS AFRAID).

For me, these sums were out of reach, but after my invitation to AFI, I managed to raise the sum before the start of my studies in a long financing phase at the beginning of 2023. I owe a large part of this financing to my parents, as well as to the DAAD German Academic Exchange Service, the Norbert Janssen Foundation, and AFI itself, which all support me with scholarships.

In addition, I was supported by a photo artist from Germany who unfortunately passed away under tragic circumstances in early summer. For this reason, I am missing a crucial part of this funding and find myself now in a challenging financial situation.

Therefore, I ask for your support!

The good news, however, is that 75% of my studies are already funded. I am asking for your help with the remaining amount of 27,000 USD (25,000 EUR) of the tuition costs for my last semester. Every amount helps me to stay longer in LA and at AFI and goes directly to me. So you can help me to make all the great things happen that are coming up for me in the next year.
